Interview with Cheryl Russell

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
By browsing the kindle store. I also belong to facebook groups and look at what other readers recommend.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I started years ago by writing childrens stories but never got them published. I wrote about an alien called Pud who came down to planet earth. He made friends with a boy called Andy.

Last year I started writing my first novel called Lily of the Valley which was historical fiction. I made it up in my imagination a few years ago whilst bedbound with ME/CFS but had to wait until well enough to put pen to paper.
What is your writing process?
I like to write first thing in the morning when I have the most energy. Sometimes before starting the novel I make notes but other times I just start writing. It depends how much information I have in my head. Sometimes I only have a brief outline and other times I have more details which I need to note down. During the day if I've stopped writing a sentence may come into my mind which I make a note of to write down for when I next write.
How do you approach cover design?
I think about the novel and what is in it and try to work out the best way to show this that is most likely to attract readers attention. I use a designer on Fiverr to design the cover. I just have to tell him what I am looking for and then he creates a great cover.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love the books by Joan Jonker especially her books featuring Mollie and Nellie. They are guaranteed to make the reader laugh and cry. They are a reminder of days gone by when everyone helped each other. Mollie and Nellie are a great double act. I'm sure they influenced my first novel Lily of the Valley.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like historical fiction and psychological thrillers. I also still enjoy school stories especially The Chalet School by Elinor M Brent-Dyer.
The historical fiction I enjoy are set in the 20 Century usually during the Second World War.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my kindle. It took a while to be persuaded to get one but now I wouldn't be without it.
Describe your desk
I sit on the sofa with my laptop on my lap. Next to the sofa is a small table with a notebook and pen so I can make notes at any time. I keep the charger for my laptop next to me for when I need it which is usually every day or two.
When did you first start writing?
Last year I started writing novels but childrens stories years ago before being struck down with ME/CFS. For years I was too ill to do anything and it was only last year when I was finally able to begin writing seriously. I now can't imagine life without writing. I love it and long to share my imagination with others.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have just started writing Gallows Lane. I got the idea whilst on a train going to London. I overheard someone talking about someone who had just come out of prison. This got my imagination going and I started wondering why they were in prison, what their name was and what happened in prison. The ideas then just flowed so when I got to London, waiting for my next train I got my notebook and pen out and began writing down my ideas ready to begin writing when I got back home. The title came to me on a bus, when I saw a signpost for Gallows Lane and thought what a wonderful title that would make.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to escape into my imagination where the real world can't get in. I get totally absorbed in writing. Putting it all on to paper.
What do your fans mean to you?
A great deal. Those that support my writing. It always amazes me that people enjoy reading what I write.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on a book about a lady who goes to prison after killing her ex husband and his new partner. I am also planning three books which will be part of a series which will be murder mysteries.
