Interview with Chaz Van Heyden

Published 2020-07-25.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Sunshine.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover new books to read by who wrote them and the topics I enjoy reading about.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Aesthetically, reading other excellent authors, practicing and rehearsing guitar pieces I wrote.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, in 8th grade, a story about the experience of traveling in an automobile late at night on a lonesome road and seeing car lights at the top of a distant hill descending and nothing else. Then the swift approach of the headlights and a swoosh going past and the distinctive 'red' taillights disappearing as swiftly in the rear view. Got approving comment from my 8th grade English teacher.
What is your writing process?
The day is full of things to write about, once a person has decided that that is what they want to do and what they want to be known for majorly. The previous 8th grade English class story is an example.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Not the "very first story" but the early stories were 'Great Adventure Stories' that included 'The Tell-Tale Heart', 'The 'Murders in Rue Morgue', 'The Pit and The Pendulum' 'The Cask of Amontilado', 'Descent Into a Malestrom'.
How do you approach cover design?
I ask a professional graphic designer to draw out or design a cover based on the book's theme: sometimes I'll ask the designer to read at minimum a few chapters of the book.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My five favorite books are:
'Up From Slavery' because I have come to know and to understand what it takes to overcome adversit.;
'Great Adventure Stories'. These stories have so much life and living in them that it makes one want to try to live more and do
more with one's potential.
'The Novel' (James A. Michener) Because it carefully and completely delineates what it takes to attain and then "maintain' a
high level of success as an author, artist, creative person in the arts.
'Ben-Hur' A truly remarkable tale in that it is written with so much reality by an author who henceforth wrote not another single
book! How did they accomplish it with a story that happened 2,000 years ago?
'The Martian' (Andy Weir) Contemporary science fiction that is so well crafted as to be in itself a classic.
What do you read for pleasure?
My recent books should tell you something: 'Unacknowledged' (Steven M. Greer MD) - 'The Blues: A Musical Journey (Martin Scorsese Presents)' - 'Music Theory: From Absolute Beginner To Expert' - '51 Science Fiction Short Stories' 'Beyond All Weapons' (L. Ron Hubbard) ' - 'The Inner Game of Tennis' (W. Timothy Gallway)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Don't have one of choice: I use several, Freda, Adobe Digital Editions, Adobe Reader, etc.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
WOM - Word of Mouth.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the projects in Long Island, NY. My schooling was stifling. Probably stifling my creative urges as well. No, that should read, " my creative output". My urges to create have never been 'truly stifled'.
When did you first start writing?
That 8th grade English class.
What's the story behind your latest book?
As a chauffeur of many years, I found that there are too many 'drivers' in automobiles that have not been trained enough or properly for it to be safe to drive our roadways.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It's this way: if a person has something to say that will benefit another, even if slightly, then say it. If there is nothing to be gained by saying something, even though it is a fact, don't say or repeat it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans, readers, critics (excuse that...critiquers not critics) are all that I write for. You see True, there is sometimes a 'cathartic' result / experience / pleasure to communicating in writing thoughts that one has had about others, about experiences I have had and about life that is in itself very gratifying; but the main gratification for writing is to see others contemplate perhaps appreciate different, sometimes 'new' and even sometimes exotic realities that they would not normally consider if I did not communicate via the written word.
