Interview with John Smither

Published 2017-12-31.
What are you working on next?
I wrote a book (more like a travelogue really), about my first experiences in China from 2007-8. It was published in 2009 or 10 and did really badly, very few people bought it. I would like to think it was due to the publisher not pushing it enough and not my writing. So my next project is to do a re-write of that book and publish it on here.
Who are your favorite authors?
Many years ago, my favourite author was Wilbur Smith, I was intrigued by his stories of adventure usually in Africa. Now I live in China it is difficult to buy books, I usually buy a selection of books whenever I travel outside of China and two of my current favourites are The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, both by Ken Follett. I also like historical fiction from the author Bernard Cornwell.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Quite often it is earlier than I would like and it is my young son waking me up, so I have little choice. Seriously though, I like to have an idea of how I plan my day beginning the night before, so by being prepared I am inspired to get up and begin writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
As well as writing, I teach English here in China, when I am not doing either of those I like to relax with my family or watch sport on TV, my favourite sports are football (soccer) and cycling.
