Interview with R.S. Pillai

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To keep physically fit I go for a morning walk covering 5.5 K.Ms in one hour. This keeps me mentally fresh and whole day goes comfortably.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am now involved in investigation of Bank fraud cases at various stages and help people indicating various areas to be examined.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I wrote was about answering the question "Who am I?" The question who am I? looks very simple! But when I ask repeatedly I am beginning to realize that it is the ultimate realization in life. It opens a new dimension everyday and every time when ask who am I? But then when a read a story from a book Executive EQ by Robert Cooper it haunted me for the whole day. This happened in a tribal village when it was occupied by a neighboring country during 1959. They banned all religious practices. One day a young man, who was newly elected as the leader of the village, saw the eldest member in a narrow hilly tract and greeted him out of respect in the traditional way. An army officer saw this and he was immediately arrested for defying the Government order as this traditional way of greeting was also banned as a religious practice. He was brought to the open place in the village the next day for punishment. He saw to his horror 18 of his family members, wife, young children, father, mother, brothers and sisters standing in a circle with fear of death in their eyes. The children were ordered to step aside and the adult members were ordered to dig a big pit watched by everyone. Then all the 18 members of his family were asked to stand in the middle of the pit. As ordered by the army officer long cotton strips, immersed in petrol were pushed inside their mouth, lighted and buried alive, in front of his eyes. The cries of young children rendered the atmosphere a mute testimony. Not only that the entire villagers were taken to the only bridge across the river connecting the village to other part, and they destroyed the bridge. Since these tribal people were afraid of deep water the army officer said, “You can construct the bridge if you want, we won’t help”. This young leader watched by his own villagers weeping loudly, lifted a huge rock and went to the deepest portion of the river dropped it came back and said, “I am prepared to carry 100 rocks for each of my people killed today. Are you prepared to come with me?” He carried 18 rocks on that day and collapsed. Even today the bridge constructed with hands alone, stands testimony for the courage and bravery exhibited by a young leader in the midst of personal calamity. The author stopped for a minute and asked the old guide who had shown the bridge and narrated the story, Are you sure the story is true?”He said, “Yes sir, I was that young leader”.
Shocked the author asked, “Please do not mistake me. What made you to react that way in the midst of that greatest tragedy in your life? He said,” two questions flashed in my mind at that time. One is who am I? answer came “I am the leader” of my people and then what I should do? “Lead by example” As a True leader what ever happens to me personally I should lead by example, I should show my people the way to fight adversity..
Tears were rolling down when I closed the book and thought for a minute. In life we react violently and emotionally feeling helpless for small, small incidents. These days when I am disturbed mentally I ask who am I? I too feel I am also a Leader for my family and let me show the way to my people “Lead by Example”. This was written in www.speakingtree.in
How do you approach cover design?
Using my collection of various photographs I select the photo, best suited for the topic and prepare by own design.
What do you read for pleasure?
I concentrate mostly on personality development books and I develop my own lectures on inter personal relationships.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was a Senior Faculty in Bank's training college. During spare time I used to read a book and write a small review article based on the theme of the book. One day my principal came to my room and I was writing very seriously without noticing his arrival. He just glanced what I was reading and very much impressed on seeing the notes and he advised me to share with my colleagues and this developed in to a writing habit. I wrote nearly 85 articles based on books read by me and circulated to all people who came for the training. I got a good response and I wrote my first book " General guidelines for Priority sector advances followed by "Stress and Tension - The Spices of Life". This too received good response and printed 6 editions and then I started writing blogs in www.speakingtree.in. Many people liked and encouraged and I also wrote Tamil poems in Tamil site www.eluthu.com.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is about "Major Bank Frauds - A Critical Review" based on experience in examining more than 150 Bank Fraud cases. I have taken about 50 cases and discussed about modus operandi, deviations from systems annd procedures by Bank officials, learning points and also various crucial issues examined to help people involved in examining Bank frauds in India.
During one of the talks on Stress Management an officer came to my chambers and after crying for sometime opened the disturbing aspect in his life. His +12 studying son wanted to play cricket for sometime and his wife did not permit because exams were fast approaching. He intervened and permitted to play for some time and he thought diversion is always good for concentration. Unfortunately the ball struck on his head and he collapsed. He said he was mentally suffering for the last 10 years with a guilty feeling "He killed his Son". When I talked to him for 30 minutes and he left my room with full confidence I felt too happy and started sharing my experiences in blogs in www.speakingtree.in and received good reviews.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It is most simple to format the book as suggested by Mr. Mark Coker and also to publish in www.smashwords.com. I experimented and there were few mistakes. With the enncouragement given I have rectified and successfully published by first autobiography CICADA on the firing line - Life as a Banker followed by Honey dews for Soul Nourishment and now the thrid book "Major Bank Frauds." The best part was the smashwords team was very patience when I made mistakes in formatting the book, but they patiently pointed out and was successful in the end.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The books of Mr. Mark Coker how to publish ebook and formatting techniques were the great motivating factors as steps were very easy to follow and implement.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
If it helps one person to face the challenges in life I feel great because I have shared my failures and how to come out of it. Since I called "Spade a Spade" I faced humiliating situations but it has not affected my happiness because I developed a positive attitude in life, and brought tremendous improvement in my personality and shared in my book, "Honey Dews for Soul Nourishment." When I share all my experiences in one way or other I feel happy I am giving confidence to someone who is disappointed in life and I am a firm believer that there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
What do your fans mean to you?
Every review on my books helps me to develop and I consider as equivalent to an international award. I respect and look forward to their esteemed reviews.
What are you working on next?
I am working on Investigation skills for Bank Fraud cases and though I am not good in writing poems I have experimented in writing Tamil Poems and with the help of smashwords I have succeeded in publishing a book "Flowers of My Garedn" in Tamil. I have given more than 500 lectures on Stress Management and now I am working in a revised edition "Stress and Tension - The Spices of Life" both in English and Tamil and hope to publish as an ebook in smashwords.
