Interview with Christopher Bruce

What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is Autobiography of an Unknown Man. I initially wrote it for my grand-children but after providing copies to family and friends they unanimously urged me to publish it. Most people commented that my life story reflects how different post WWII lives were lived and the unusual lifestyle which some including me had over 60 years ago. Like many WWII children I can remember meeting my father, our emigration to Namibia when it was still known as South West Africa. My father working on a diamond mine in the Southern Namib Desert where there were no telephones, only short-wave radio, no transport, TV, internet or cellphones and my friends and I had the whole of the desert, the Orange River Estuary and the Atlantic Skeleton Cost to explore. After three years of education in Namibia, boarding school was the only option for further education and I record my experiences at St. Joseph's College, a catholic boys school in Cape Town where I thrived despite some ill treatment including beatings and attempted sexual abuse. During school holidays at home in Namibia we made our own entertainment, built canoes, land yachts, dinghies and even a car from mine dump scraps. I had a great sporting career at school and later at university and lived through a period when all young people were safe and free. The book records hard work and the university pranks I got involved in and graduation. My early career in South Africa and the successes and failures encountered, my return to Namibia and the formation of my own company to build there. My huge success in the first 10 years of running my own company despite building throughout the South African War with Angola and experiencing rocket and mortar attacks, ambushes and landmine explosions. As a consequence of these events the acquisition of my own armoured anti landmine vehicle and aircraft which I learned to fly. The effects of the sustained sanctions against South Africa and its effect on my company, the collapse of my company, my new life in the construction industry in South Africa, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand and Middle East and my retirement to Thailand where I have written this and other books.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Firstly, I needed something to do after retirement and as a long time reader I thought I should give writing a try. I became an Indie author because it was impossible to find a traditional publisher to publish an unknown author.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords gave me the opportunity to self publish. I chose Smashwords because of the simplicity of their system and the fact that although I'm not very IT savvy I was none the less able to use it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Enabling me to make good use of my time and keeping my brain active in my twilight years.
What do your fans mean to you?
Unfortunately I don't have fans as such but I do have a growing list of readers of my books and it gives me great pleasure to know that these readers get a certain amount of pleasure from my books.
What are you working on next?
I am a diabetic kidney failure sufferer and I'm trying to put together a book of my experiences trying to fight these diseases.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wilbur Smith, Steve Berry, John Le Carre, Bill O'Reilly (the killing series). Many others to numerous to mention.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The need to exercise my body and brain.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Because my mobility is very limited and I can no longer drive I read, write, maintain correspondence with my family and friends and watch TV.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I mostly use the Internet to search for subjects that interest me.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. My book; the Gourmet's Guide to Making Sausage. This book was based on recipes used in restaurants that my wife and I had interests in and a fresh sausage factory we set up in Thailand.
What is your writing process?
Choose a subject, research the subject, set out a framework for the book, write, proof read, self edit and find an independent editor for the final edit.
How do you approach cover design?
I prepare my own sketch design and the employ a graphic artist to "polish" it.
What do you read for pleasure?
Crime, law and order, detective, biographies, travel, history.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My laptop.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
None. All have some good attributes but none are exceptionally helpful.
