Interview with Chris Taylor

Published 2018-07-12.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a wife and mother of five children under the age of 17. When I’m not writing, I am usually ferrying the kids around to sporting events, music lessons or other school commitments. I also enjoy curling up with a good book or cooking something delicious that usually involves chocolate!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I subscribe to online magazines such as Romance Daily News and BookBub and I always check out what’s on offer every day. I have discovered some amazing, new to me authors this way and have found it to be a reliable way to find great books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Absolutely! The first “proper” story I ever wrote was when I was 18. I’d just graduated from high school and I had some time off while I decided what I wanted to do with my life. I would get up every morning and go into my mom’s office and pound out my story on an old manual typewriter. I would work all day, stopping only for lunch and bathroom breaks. My story was a beautiful romance novel with a 19-year-old protagonist who went to London to be a nanny. At the time, I had never even been on a plane! Still, I thought it was a fantastic story. I submitted it to what was then Mills & Boon (now Harlequin) and received a polite rejection letter in due course. It was a minor setback, but certainly didn’t deter me from chasing my dream of being a romance author! Thirty published books later and I’m still on fire!
What is your writing process?
I’m lucky enough to write full-time, so I arrive in my home office by nine in the morning and I’m still there late into the night. I take a break for lunch and at four when my kids arrive home from school. I usually spend from four to eight with the family doing the usual stuff - homework, cooking dinner, etc and then I go back to my desk. I’m a bit of a night owl, so I’m often still there until eleven most nights.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It wasn’t the first story I ever read, but it was the first romance story that I completely and totally LOVED! It was an historical romance novel called “A Rose in Winter” , written by the wonderful and incomparable Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. I absolutely adored every book she wrote and read most of them three or four times over. I own both a hardback and paperback copy of A Rose in Winter and still enjoy reading it to this day.
How do you approach cover design?
I usually have a vision of the cover I want. I keep it simple, all about the characters, with a little of the setting thrown in. I work with an amazing cover designer who has designed all thirty of my covers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read so many books for pleasure. I love everything from romance (all genres) to thrillers and crime fiction. Some of my favourite authors are Sandra Brown, Nora Roberts, Richard North Patterson, Kathy Reichs, Patricia Cornwall and James Patterson.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I usually read on my Kindle.
Describe your desk
My desk is either very neat or a complete mess, depending on where I am in my writing process. When I’m starting a new book and tossing up ideas, doing a draft, figuring out my story, my desk is very tidy. While I am actually writing, my desk begins to get cluttered with little notes I write to myself to remind me to go back and insert such and such or delete this because the story has evolved in a different direction to the one I initially envisaged. Once I have finished the first draft and have dealt with all my post-it notes, my desk starts to get clearer again. Then the process begins all over again!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a farm in rural New South Wales, Australia. I lived with my mom and dad and five sisters and a myriad of farm animals. We often had pet kangaroos we’d raised from babies, little piglets, horses, dogs, sheep, goats and the like. I am the fourth child, so my older sisters were the ones who introduced me to romance books from our town library. I started out with Harelquin and quickly moved onto every romance book in the library. I was in heaven!

When I started writing, I always knew I wanted to write romance.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Having a background in criminal law, I’m always intrigued by the possibility that an innocent man could be convicted for a crime he didn’t commit. This is the premise behind my latest book, A Perfect Crime. The hero finds himself being framed for the murder of his ex-girlfriend and relies on my heroine lawyer to rescue him with the truth.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love being in control of my entire writing career, from the creation of the novel, to the cover design, publication schedule and marketing. It’s a lot of work and I have to wear a lot of different hats, but I love the freedom I have as an indie author. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords gave indie authors their very first opportunity to publish books across every platform with every digital retailer. Mark Coker had amazing insight into the future of the publishing industry and was one of the first to create these opportunities. Living in Australia, I would never have been able to publish to Barnes & Noble or iBooks without Smashwords. I will be forever grateful.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me. It is for my readers that I write! I love hearing from them and love knowing that I have provided them some enjoyment and entertainment and sometimes so much more through my efforts on the keyboard. It is so humbling.
