Interview with C. K. Thomas

What are your five favorite books, and why?
I enjoy reading novels set in the American South. Among my favorites are The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Saving CeeCee Honeycut: A Novel by Beth Hoffman, and Fried Green Tomatoes by Fannie Flagg. The Mitford Series by Jan Karon also ranks among my favorite southern novels. The first in the series is At Home in Mitford. I enjoy all these books so much because quirky southern characters touch the part of me that longs to be zany and out of the ordinary. I grew up in Indiana, but my family's history in the United States includes Virginia where my mother's father was born. I often heard southern expressions like, "Circumstances alter cases," "Take a tater and wait" and "Sleep two rows at a time." Southern fare like fried chicken and sweet tea were regulars at our table. I also enjoy reading thrillers, mysteries and novels set in Arizona like the Joanna Brady series by J. A. Jance that takes place in Cochise County. I could add many more books among my favorites, but it is impossible for me to limit my choices to just five favorites.
What do you read for pleasure?
Every book I read, I read for pleasure! I'm not necessarily after a learning experience when I choose a book, but each book I read holds an opportunity for learning something new. I gained so much insight into the Kennedy family while reading Mrs. Kennedy and Me written by Clint Hill, her body guard during the White House years.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read using a Kindle for e-books, but also like to read using the Kindle app on an iPad and my iPhone. It's great being able to take a whole library of books wherever I go!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm not the best marketing guru. I have to force myself to market my books because I'd rather be spending time writing rather than marketing. I'm sure this is a bane for many writers. The Smashwords Summer Sale in July makes it easy to give sales a bump by offering a discounted price and having the offering promoted by Smashwords. I've also created an author Facebook page at C. K. Thomas and use Twitter to connect with readers using the handle @wxyz63. I have an online profile page on About Me and have written for various E-zines online to get my name out there. I also blog at ckthomasauthor.blogspot.com and as a blog writer once a month on the 29th at https://phxpublishingandbookpromotion.wordpress.com/. Joining a Meet Up Group dedicated to book marketing was one of the best promotional decisions I've made. I still need to do more, but I tend to drag my feet when it comes to marketing. Check on the Meet Up Groups in your area at meetup.com.
Describe your desk
The area around my desktop contains African violets, puppy and bird likenesses, favorite photos and reference manuals. I like to keep a large portion of my desk clear where I can spread things out when I need to, so my computer resides in a computer desk that makes an "L" shape with my worktop. Of course, I also keep paperback copies of my four novels nearby to encourage me as I write. Out the window by my desk I have a view of the backyard garden, a birdbath, and the umbrella table next to the pool. I'm blessed with a terrific place to write! Oh yes, my two long-haired Chihuahuas keep me company in two doggie beds under the desk beside me.
