Interview with Clair Louise Coult

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly through friends recommendations. I like reading books that are a little bit different from the mainstream.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was at infant school and I wrote a story about James Bond!
What is your writing process?
I'm not sure I have a process. I have a very vivid imagination and I am influenced by all kinds of things. I get an idea in my head, I might mull it over for a few days and when I think I can give it direction then I sit down at the computer and write. The characters then take over, sometimes the story doesn't pan out quite how I planned it but the characters always seem to know what they are doing.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kobo Glo, it goes everywhere with me. I have a white and blue one, it's light, easy to hold and I love how the screen lights up so I can carry on reading when it gets dark. I also have a Kindle Touch but I prefer my Kobo.
Describe your desk
Cluttered! I am a very untidy person and I have a large desk with shelves built in. It is always untidy and covered with junk, coffee cup, camera, scraps of paper, chocolate wrappers, lips balm, nail polish, knitting needles, scraps of yarn, CD's, hand cream, Japanese craft books, jam jars full of buttons and stuff like that.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town near Sheffield, UK and I never actually left. I have based most of my novels in South Yorkshire because that's what I know the best, the people, the buildings, the general attitude and way of living from the posh big houses to the run down council flats.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to share my stories and not have them sitting, unloved on a slush pile. It is incredibly difficult to get noticed by agents and publishers but at least by self publishing I can reach a small audience, which is better than no audience.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is the positive feedback I get from my readers. When someone takes the time to email or tweet me to let me know how much they enjoyed my book it puts the biggest smile on my face.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Sleeping! I actually have a lot of hobbies. I knit, crochet, spin and dye my own yarn, I sew and do embroidery, I do paper crafts, I play my guitar and sing, I play with my children and my pets, and I love cook and bake.
