Interview with Clair McIntyre

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, the first story I wrote was a spy book for kids. I was nearing completion of the story when the spy kids movies came out and I was upset because I felt that my idea had been stolen. It didn't really deter me though because I continued to write but it did change my interests from spy books to paranormal.
What is your writing process?
I don't have a real fixed writing process, normally it starts with an idea that doesn't leave me alone. I get fixate on it and then expand it. .I find that if I stick to a plan, I get bored easy and I stop writing to work on something else. To keep myself motivated, I often work on three stories at a time, I have one book in editing, and two different stories that I'm actually writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
There's a few different stories that have influenced me in wanting to write. I think the first was Redwall by Brian Jacques, followed by Animorphs by KA Applegate and Bulfinch's mythology. All three are still close to my heart but I think Redwall had the biggest impact because I followed that series for years and still pick it up from time to time.
How do you approach cover design?
I call my brother-in-law with an idea and let him run with it. The cover art is 100% his and I'm ever thankful for it.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Ooh... hard question.
But I'm going to have to say:
1) Redwall by Brian Jacques
2) Bulfinch's mythology
3) The Illiad
4) Instruments of Murder by Max Haines
5) The Scoundrels Lady by Loretta Chase
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything that catches my fantasy, I'm not really genre specific. A lot of what I read fuels what I write so I try to read a lot of different things so I have lot to drawn on.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My computer, I'm not big on e-readers I prefer books but I do read a lot on my computer.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook and social media.
Describe your desk
Desk? I don't use a desk, I write pretty much anywhere and I like comfy places like my couch when I right for hours.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Canada but I was born in Scotland. I use both cultural influences in my book, a lot of my crazy out there characters are based on characteristics of people I grew up with.
When did you first start writing?
When I was ten I believe. I used to have a lot of vivid dreams that I liked to tell my mom. My parents worked a lot when I was young and were often tired so my mom use to tell me to write it down so she could read it later. It kind of just continued on from there.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A few different things, the first being the idea of soul mates, I like the idea of souls who can't be parted it's a real interesting idea and I won't lie to say that it would be really cool to find a soul mate. There's also the Northrup Frye's journey of a hero influence and I love powers based on elements.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just want people to read my stories, being an indie author or a published author doesn't matter to me. I want someone to pick up my story and be lost in the world from beginning to end.
