Interview with Cindy Larie

Published 2015-04-20.
Describe your desk
My desk is a small metal and plastic, adjustable table that my daughter bought me for Christmas, so I would be able to write comfortably on the couch, since I don't have a private room to put a desk and chair.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Louisiana. I spent half of my childhood in a tiny town that was barely big enough to qualify for its own stop light. I used to walk to the library, where I would fill my arms with science fiction, fantasy, horror, and, when I'd exhausted all other options, romances, to keep myself entertained. I've always loved to read, and that love turned to a love for writing. I think the slow southern pace of life encourages daydreaming, which, in turn, encourages story telling, and I do love to tell a good story.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was around eight years old. I remember writing a poem and showing it to my mom. Without telling me, she submitted it to the local newspaper and, after they accepted and published it, she showed me my poem in print. I was on cloud nine, and a die hard writer was born.
What's the story behind your latest book?
That question is a little tough, because it'd be more accurate to say 'books', as I am currently working on a few. My baby, though, explores the world of faeries, and is looking like a fantasy with a bit of a scary slant.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I decided to become an indie author because I knew I had a good story and I wanted to share it. After wading through a few rejections, a friend of mine suggested I try self publishing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has contributed to my success by helping me to be seen on several platforms, allowing me to reach out to readers all over the world.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing, to me, is seeing my characters come alive on the pages. I love watching them come into their own personas and lead me to the people they want to become. I can get lost for hours in the lives of my characters. A close tie is watching someone read my books and seeing the emotions cross their faces as they experience my stories, and hearing how much they enjoyed reading them.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me. I really love writing a story that touches someone or makes them look at things differently, and hearing their thoughts, straight from them.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a few different stories. They run the gamut from fantasy to romance and erotica. I try to stick to just one, but it's really hard, when a good idea climbs in and takes hold.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love reading Anne Rice, Laurel K Hamilton, Steven King, and Piers Anthony.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My three year old grandson and the feisty characters screaming in my ears are what inspires me to get out of bed each day. We start the day with grandma's special rendition of Goldylocks and the Three Bears - the same way we start bedtime. Then he snuggles close beside me, watching his favorite show, while I get lost in my characters' lives for an hour or two.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm playing with my grandson, or planning dinner, or catching up on Supernatural episodes.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
As a writer, I am a member of several Facebook groups, and I have discovered many wonderful authors and ebooks through others in my groups.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote, was when I was maybe ten years old, was a sweet little tale about a rabbit family. The little rabbits were playing hookie from school and missed seeing their favorite superhero.
What is your writing process?
My writing process isn't very structured. I like to sit down, start my story, and let my characters steer. I've read about people who outline every chapter, but that's never worked for me. I shape the story in my head and it just comes out, as if I'm copying from the original inside my mind.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read was The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien and it inspired in me a love of fantasy. I devoured the science fiction and fantasy section at the small library where I grew up, and demanded more. It's still my first love.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have been known to read just about anything, if it sounded interesting. I've read everything from the Star Trek series to Anne Rice to survivalist stories by William W. Johnstone, from the steamiest romance to horror by Dean Koontz.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My e-reading device of choice is my laptop or, once I get the screen repaired, my tablet, if I need portability.
