Interview with Samantha Bacon

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been a colour feature writer for two Australian national magazines for the past ten years and this complements my role as an interior designer. Although contributing to magazines has not made me wealthy it is one of the most enjoyable aspects of my portfolio of work. I really enjoy researching new colour and decorating trends and also love learning about how trends in colour and design have evolved over the years to bring us to where we are now in the exciting world of interiors. I love writing and therefore thought it would be good fun to condense some of my knowledge into a book about colour and how to use it in interior decorating projects. A good grounding in colour is really important for people approaching their own decorating projects and I noticed that there were not many books around just focusing on this aspect - so I decided to write one.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is when people I don't know tell me that I have helped them to solve a decorating problem and that I have made their interior or exterior colour choices easy. It's great to see your book published and then to hear that people are finding practical solutions to their decorating dilemmas from it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Interior decorating can present a challenge to some people and I really like the fact that I can share my knowledge and help people to make their house into a real home that they enjoy being in. Without my fans, there would be no point in writing the book.
What are you working on next?
My first e-book was really a good foundation for how to use colour in interior decorating. My next e-book will specialise in an area of the home and will cover a wider range of decorating advice but of course will include lots more expert tips about colour. Ideas include Children's Rooms, Kitchens and Bathrooms, Living spaces etc.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords made the process of e-publishing very simple. Their free e-books on how to publish and market your e-book were an inspiration and helped me to navigate through the area of self publishing without stress.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite colour author is Kevin McCloud and I also love drawing inspiration from other designers including Martyn Lawrence Bullard whose clever use of colour is exceptional. I love to read anything written by Donna Tartt.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
There are many things that inspire me to get up and start the day. Firstly, my husband and beautiful son and secondly the pleasure I gain from being an interior designer and writer. I am blessed living on the NSW coast, just north of Sydney, surrounded by pristine beaches, waterways and stunning national park where I gain much of my inspiration for colour and design.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing about colour and design, I am practising my craft, helping clients to achieve their dream homes. When I'm not working, I love to spend time with my family, reading, cooking and tasting wines, many from the local Hunter Valley region. I also love travelling and finding new sources of decorating inspiration.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I really enjoy browsing - just as I would in a bricks and mortar book store. I think it is best not to have too many fixed ideas about what you're interested in as you will miss out on the unexpected.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm currently reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt who is one of my favourite authors. I have just finished reading A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout which was inspirational. A few years ago, I set up a book club with a group of friends and this has been amazing as I get to read books that I wouldn't normally choose.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in London which is quite different to where I live now in Australia. I loved it though and often visit for an injection of culture and excitement. London is a great city for new ideas, design and colour trends and this is where my love of interior design began. Sydney is also a wonderful, exciting and beautiful city with some great designers and stunning colour inspiration all around.
