Interview with Clive Gotley

What is your e-reading device of choice?
Currently use a Kindle Fire HD but also have an original Kindle B/W.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in London but grew up just outside. My writing is influenced by the wonderfully diverse people I have met on this journey.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Indie publishing just makes the rejection letters so much easier to bear! There is so much talent in the world that now finally gets a voice.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a book based in part on people I have met and their stories. It tells the story of a couple who are separated by the onset of World War Two and the different paths their lives take. It has been an emotional rollercoaster writing it and is currently in the editing process.
Who are your favorite authors?
Ian McEwan is a genius and it still brings a great feeling of sadness to me that Iain Banks was taken from us so early.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I always try to look at the world through the eyes of a child and that way I always find something exciting about my day!
What is your writing process?
I am a planner. I write a scene list and then let fly which often makes the scene list change beyond recognition but at least I have an idea where I am going with the story.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
To Kill A Mocking Bird - Harper Lee. Read when I was about ten so I felt very at home with the main character. It formed a great sense of justice and morality in me which helped me later in life when I was a defence lawyer.
Describe your desk
Old antique wooden desk with a beautiful Mac on it. Covered in paper and very messy.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Discovering an exciting plot line that seems to appear out of nowhere!
