Interview with Connie Squiers

When did you first start writing?
I've always loved horses and as a kid I read every horse book written. I started writing The Copper Colt in 1966, believing I could tell a horse tale other horse crazy kids would find interesting. I added to my "book" through the years, and finally realized my characters would be more valuable to my readers if they had a strong moral core. So, my books show that prayer and faith is an integral part of their lives and despite many their trials, they keep their eyes on God as the source of their help, comfort, and peace.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Shady Springs Ranch is about an angry young foster child who has run away from foster parents many times, but this time is different. With the Kellingtons she finds unconditional acceptance, love for Jesus, and a love for horses ... especially for one in particular who was a rescue horse himself. This story is set in Wimberley, Texas and also explores the area around Austin and San Antonio. As in my other books, I teach about horses and in this one even about riding and cutting cattle. My books always teach kids about God (and horses) through dialog with others.
What has inspired you to write the most?
Horses, my faith, and human nature have inspired me most. I love to put my characters in difficult situations and make them respond in godly ways instead of spiteful, negative ways. Before I write I pray and God shows me the nature of each character and how I can get His message across without trying to pound Christian principles into a young person's head ... which is unproductive.
What type of readers do you hope to attract?
My books would be wonderful for public school as well as home schooled children. Actually, anyone of any age who loves to read about horses would enjoy these books. They not only show the interaction between the characters, but are full of interesting facts about horses in general, different horse breeds, and all types of riding, from dressage to jumping and even barrel racing and working cows. My book, Choctaw, which is a book about bullying, highlights the unusual sport of mounted archery. If a parent wants to get their children interested in reading, or having books read to them, my books are action-packed and perfect. A side benefit is the main characters come to look at life with a godly perspective. The young readers grow spiritually because they see positive behavior consistently modeled for them.
