Interview with Chadi Nassar

What do you read for pleasure?
I read everything for pleasure. Articles online, business books, self help books, novels, and anything else that comes my way. I also like to read books recommended by friends and family. Once I start reading, that's it, I'm usually absorbed into a book. It is rare when I do not connect to a book.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle Paperwhite. Just in love with it. Easy to handle and looks like a book too :)
Describe your desk
Messy. Yet, I know where everything is.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the UAE. It was a time when PlayStations and Sega were new. It influenced my writing since we took road trips every weekend and I would make up stories about almost everything I saw while in the back seat of my parent's car. The cheap garbage bag that was swaying in the wind had an origin story and so did the person crossing the road. I still do this today. In a way, the place I grew up expanded my imagination but I do not use it directly in my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was younger, short stories here and there. When I had just graduated high-school at the age of 16, I took a year off and started writing more seriously. It was not until I got my heart broken in college that my first book, Sculpting David, came along. It was an outlet for me where I turned a horrible time in my life into a positive experience. Over a decade later, and the finished product is finally out to the world!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Sculpting David, is a story of the main character named David. He is shown from his own perspective and how he sees the world and from the perspective of the 2 major lovers in his life. They show him in completely different lights and stages of his life as well as paint him through their own brushes and experiences.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My love for writing. When I write I go into a zone and just spill it all out. My love for stories and telling those stories. I hope that people that read my writing will also be motivated to change something in their life.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has made my life easier in that it integrated all the platforms into one. All I have to do it publish my book on the website and they act like a digital distributor. AWESOME!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I write from an emotional part of my being, so it usually is quite cathartic for me. My greatest joy is being able to say I did it, and turning whatever I am going through into a story that will transform something in someone's life!
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. My friends are already my biggest fans and they always get the first look at my work. I love their critical eye on things. Fans in general are always there and can be ruthless, but from a place of respect and love for the work. That is what I like most about them, they give it to me straight and I hear them. I love my fans!
What are you working on next?
The second installment of Sculpting David called "The fallibilities of my father and my mundane mother". This one will be taking a huge emotional and energetic toll on me since it is being written from a place of experiences that I myself went through and others have too. I draw my inspiration from the world around me and the stories I hear.
