Interview with Colin Dunbar

What motivated you to become an indie author?
To be honest, I can say indie authorship chose me. It was almost a natural progression as I've been in technical writing for 35+ years. In my career, although in a corporate environment, I've been self-publishing for over 3 decades. Agreeably, I did not have the need to sell the manuals, guides, and reports to the public, but the process was very similar.

It was a natural fit for me to follow the indie author path, especially since I have a passion for non-fiction. I had given the traditional publishing a shot once, with no luck.

I also enjoy the freedom and control of self-publishing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That stems from something that started when I was a kid of about 11. My folks gave me the encyclopedia Britannica, and I spent hours creating documents from a variety of subjects.

It's from there that my curiosity developed, and my love of learning new things.

It's going on a road of discovery - researching, and then sharing what I learned - that is my greatest joy of writing. And the actual design and formatting of my books I enjoy tremendously.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My very first short story was "Poetic Justice", and I wrote that in 1986 or 1987.
What do you read for pleasure?
I only read non-fiction. Biographies, memoirs, entrepreneurship, writing, self-publishing, psychology, body language, and the list goes on and on. Anything that piques my interest.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Do I only get to choose five? (smiling)

Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
I read this book in '81/'82, and it changed my outlook on life. This book gave me the foundation to pursue and reach all the goals I've ever had. It is a timeless classic.

The Success University by Og Mandino
This is actually a compilation of articles on practically all aspects of success, written by some the greats in the world. I enjoy reading parts of this book as a reminder.

The Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude by Jeffrey Gitomer
This is one of the most practical books I've read on the subject of attitude. Reading it often helps me to maintain a positive attitude and reminds me not to focus on the trivial things in life.

The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Dr Joseph Murphy
Awesome book. The first time I read this brilliant book, I was in awe. Learning of the amazing power of the subconscious mind was... inspiring. Every now and then, I re-visit this book.

The Success Principles by Jack Canfield and Janet Switzer
What can I say? It's a Jack Canfield book.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Not writing? (laughing)

Seriously, when I'm not writing I read. As Stephen King says in his memoir, "On Writing", "If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot." I was very pleased when I read that and showed my wife :o)

I try to make time for photography, and now and then I try my hand at woodworking.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't really have favorites. It's more about the book than the author, for me.
What are you working on next?
I'm very close to finishing my book on formatting a book in Word. It's a how-to book for indie authors.
What's the story behind your next book?
In the years that I offered my book design service, I came to realize how much people struggled to format their books. These people were not in the publishing or book design fields, and were unaware of book design techniques. Almost everyone was familiar with Word, but struggled using it to format their book professionally.

I wrote this book to help aspiring indie authors to be able to format and design their books professionally (both ebooks and paper books).
