Interview with Sara Collins

Published 2015-03-25.
What is your writing process?
I'm not an organised pre planner! The story comes out of me in chunks. I tend to let my fingers empty out what's running through my head and then go back over what I have written to refine again and again. About half way through I tend to sketch out where I'm heading. I also jot down notes about my characters as I go to keep track of them and their potential influences. Occasionally I'll write out an entire backstory for key characters to help grow them.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read all sorts of books. I like a story that keeps me guessing with unexpected characters who grab you and pull you along with them on their journey. It could be romance, paranormal, historical or sci-if.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My IPhone! It is just so handy - always with me, so when I have a few spare minutes I can dip into my latest read wherever I am.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I really struggle with marketing. I find it hard to sell myself and my work. It is something I need to work on. Having said that - what little success I've had has come from using the Smaswords community.
Describe your desk
It's my lap!!!
When did you first start writing?
I started writing about 4 years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am currently writing the sequel to Samsara. The story jumps forward 20 years. Summer and Boden are married but she is unhappy. They move around constantly and Boden's over protectiveness has taken away her freedom despite her immortal state. A return to England brings new supernatural friends who reveal some unexpected truths, which shake up her world into disarray. In this book Summer will discover her true destiny and find her rightful place with her true love at her side.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am impatient and don't like direct rejection!! I have a day job and a busy family life so writing has to fit in with that and sometimes it has to wait, but being an indie author gives me that freedom. Publishing yourself also gives you the opportunity to do what you love and get feedback on your work from people looking for a good story. The endless waiting and searching for literary agents really got to me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The guidance they give you is invaluable and the community is super supportive.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Discovering the story. Sometimes I'm driving along and the next part of the story pops in my head. I get so excited I can't wait to get it down on paper!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family inspires me but writing allows me to escape.
