Interview with Connie Shelton

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Assuming that we're talking about the first 'real' book, with chapters and no pictures . . . I don't remember the title or much about the plot, but I vividly remember that I was seven years old at the time and my immediate reaction was to beg my mother to take me back to the library so I could get another one. There has never been a time, for the rest of my life, that I haven't been reading a book. All this reading is surely a big factor in why I so much wanted to become a writer.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Once I became determined to write a novel, I had a lot of false starts. I'd get a few pages done and then couldn't figure out where it should go next. I read one book on writing craft and then jumped in, and over the course of two years I finished a 500 page manuscript. My opening scene must have been pretty good--it won third place in a writing competition--but the whole book never got picked up by a publisher, and later advice from a writer friend was that I get back to basics and come up with a better plot.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm a native New Mexican, third generation. My grandparents were ranchers during the Depression era, less than a hundred miles from where I live now. The culture and traditions of this state are very ingrained in me, and I think that comes through in both my Charlie Parker series (set in Albuquerque) and my Samantha Sweet books (in Taos). I love using our actual locations and including characters who represent the unique blend of Anglo, Hispanic, and Indian cultures we have here.
What do you read for pleasure?
While I'm plotting or writing the first draft of a mystery or romance, I try to avoid reading other books in the same genre. I don't want to be influenced or inadvertently pick up someone's idea. During those times, I'll read literary fiction, historical fiction, suspense, thrillers, whatever is on the best-seller lists. Favorite authors are Sue Grafton, Janet Evanovich, Susan Slater, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Elmore Leonard, Steve Brewer, Diana Gabaldon ---there really are too many to name. In the non-fiction arena I'll read books on economics or investing, spirituality, how-to's on writing technique (yes, I believe we can always learn something!), psychology, legal advice. Again, too many to really get specific---I'm all over the board.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle Paperwhite!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
My personal mailing list is gold. I keep in touch with my readers once or twice a month (some of them have been with me for more than 8 years now). I've also 'met' a lot of other cozy mystery authors, by participating in boxed sets together and through social media, and we do regular cross-promotion. It works well because all our fans like the same type of stories. I have to admit I'm not great at social media---a little Facebook and occasional tweets--but I have to be careful that online time doesn't eat too much into my writing day.
What is your writing process?
Through trial and error, I've discovered that I need a plot outline to work from. Coming up with the story as I wrote (seat of the pants writing) resulted in way too many dead ends and loads of rewriting. So, coming up with at least a rough outline is my first step. Placing significant events at strategic points along the way is crucial to avoid being stumped 1/3 of the way through or ending up with a plot that sags in the middle. The method has worked so well for me that I teach it to my writing students, as well.

Once I have a solid framework for the story, that's when I begin writing the scenes and it all comes together. I begin my day with a walk in nature, using that time to compose my thoughts. Once I sit down to write, I'll normally work for 4-6 hours, and I aim for ten manuscript pages, even on the days when I'm not especially in the mood to write. At that rate, I finish about three novels a year.
Describe your desk
Ah. Well, I prefer it fairly neat and clear around my work space. But I'm admitting right now that isn't always the case. My plot outline and character notes are always in reach, along with a street map of Taos, where my Samantha Sweet series is set. A dictionary and thesaurus are at hand whenever I'm editing. Plot notes and ideas for future books, along with unedited manuscripts are stacked on a credenza at the side.

I tend to be nuts with sticky notes and to-do lists. At times they are everywhere, but when I really need to concentrate I'll gather them up and get them out of sight. One cluttered area that I never clear away is my vision board--it hangs on the wall right in front of me (another board of 'visions realized' hangs across the room). Those dreams and visions have brought me a very long way in this journey.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is Sticky Sweet, #12 in the Samantha Sweet series. So, okay, here's how it came about. I was in the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver a couple of summers ago, browsing through the used books, and I came across a book on con artists. It was incredibly detailed about how con men work and the various tricks they use. Sticky Sweet's plot involves several of these cons, and I turned it around a bit since the con man is actually the murder victim.

Making good use of my resources, I've also started a new mystery series in which five women (dubbing themselves the Heist Ladies) band together to ferret out a variety of con games and to take down the bad guys who perpetrate them. There will be five books in this series, each featuring one of the women as the viewpoint character and the one who starts the ball in motion for that particular case. They've been loads of fun to write about!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've been indie since 1994, when I finished my first mystery novel and began to study how to go about selling it to New York. The process was long and frustrating, so I figured hey, I can do this myself. And I did. This was in the days of print and the only feasible route was to get books into bookstores. The ebook was barely a gleam in anyone's eye. I joined small press organizations, learned how to do it correctly, and did quite well, eventually signing several other authors. We had published 35 titles when a buyer came along. I sold the press in 1999 and became a traditionally published author for awhile.

By 2009 my traditional gig was waning. When I had the chance to get the rights back for my entire backlist at the same time Amazon introduced KDP and Smashwords introduced e-books for the rest of the market, well the decision was a no-brainer. I jumped right in, and have been loving the e-book publishing business ever since. It would take big money to lure me into a traditional publishing deal now, and even bigger money to talk me into giving up control over my projects.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy, for me, comes after the writing is done, the book is out in the world, and I start to hear from my readers. They often share their own stories involving personal tragedy and problems, and tell me how my stories have helped to bring them through dark times. Wow. To think that they'll take the time to write to me--I am humbled and honored. It's so inspiring to know I have brightened their day in some way. If I can continue to do that, it's absolutely what makes the hours at the keyboard all worthwhile for me.
