Interview with Constance Messmer

Describe your desk
My writing desk is actually a wooden picnic table that never made it outside.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a Midwest neighborhood, second house from a wooded ravine. Plus, my family spent summer vacations on a lakeside campground in Wisconsin. Outdoors or indoors, I was often daydreaming, making up games with friends, and talking with ghosts or the family dog. These times and my continued love and kindred spirit connection to nature are at the core of my writing c.a.m.p. shorts.
When did you first start writing?
I first started putting pen to paper and fingers to keyboard in college where I got an A+ in my poetry writing class. Before then, the stories played out only in my head and later to my children at bedtime, and very long car trips.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to get my stories out in a way that was psychically accurate, authentic, and timely. Becoming an indie author allowed me the freedom to do those desires justice.
How do you approach cover design?
My friend, Eileen O'Donnell illustrates all of my book covers. She is a talented artist who puts up with me asking her to create illustrations for my c.a.m.p. shorts.
Who are your favorite authors?
Richard Peck, Kathi Appelt, and Jerry Spinelli -to name a few.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My characters haunt me, my children inspire me, and my dog pesters me. They all seem to say, "Come ahn, let's go!"
