Interview with David Cousland

Published 2014-12-10.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever had was "South with Scott" - the story of Robert Falcon Scott's attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. I've had the book over 50 years and it still holds pride of place on my bookshelf. I think that is probably the reason I enjoy reading Biographies / Autobiographies (some at least).
How do you approach cover design?
Originally I used an agent, but with more recent e-books I've enjoyed trying to create my own with more than a little help from friends / family plus an occasional model. It has to be cost effective. The cover is the first selling point, has to be attractive, eye-catching and reflect a part of the story.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
South with Scott - the story of man's battle with the elements and desperately trying to succeed.
Fatu Hiva - Thor Heyerdahl's voyage to and brief life on a remote South Sea Island.
Treasure Island - as a youngster there is nothing better to stir the imagination more than a tale of piracy on the high seas.
African Queen - another story of a battle with a river and a wartime enemy.
Monty - My Part in his Victory - Spike Milligan's account of his desert exploits in WW2 - fabulous sense of humour.
What do you read for pleasure?
I confess - very little, always seem to be busy elsewhere.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm still searching for the answer to this one.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
In the industrial West Midlands of the UK. I believe that parts of this background and my adult life have formed key areas of most of my stories. Mix those experiences with imagination and a few dreams and if lucky, you may have something.
When did you first start writing?
At the tender age of 62 - just over 2 years ago
What's the story behind your latest book?
I don't drink decaf - this was simply a comment made by a friend at a wedding breakfast. "That sounds like a great title for a book" I said and here it is. Build a scene of marriage breakdowns around it and you have a conspiracy for murder(s).
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After working in the banking industry for 37 years, I finally discovered I had an imagination and decided to do something with it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has given me another outlet. Although there have been no sales here as yet, I'm still hopeful. Maybe my stories are too "British". I have a couple of U.S. based shorts with another in the early stages - who knows?
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I just enjoy putting my thoughts, my imagination in front of other people. It would be great to earn a little from it and maybe that will happen in time. I will continue for as long as I can.
