Interview with R. C. Hand

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't recall, but in grammar school we had the SRA reading program and we read all the time. I think it sparked my interest in reading and telling stories.
How do you approach cover design?
My wife and I have traveled extensively, so I use photos that we have taken from around the world.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Anything written by Mark Twain or the Sherlock Holmes adventures. I just finished Moby Dick and Two Years before the mast for research for a book I'm starting soon.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle reader
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
None so far.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Southern California, but in a very racially mixed area. I had to grow up fast.
When did you first start writing?
Sixth grade. I wrote a book about little league baseball players.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This is my second novel, I should be done before the end of September. It is a story about a family out of control. It becomes a murder mystery with many interesting characters.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have to write, so I decided to see if I could get people to read my stories.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
i haven't started with smash words yet. I'm in the process. I need to finish my book first. I already have a novel on Kindle.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Trying to present a point of view that I feel is important.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm without fans at the moment. Sveral of my neighbors have read my stories and find them interesting.
What are you working on next?
My third novel is a spy story. It involves a grandfather and grandson. The grandfather has a secret life which the grandson discovers and becomes a part of.
Who are your favorite authors?
Mark Twain, Richard Henry Dana, David Theroux, Dan Brown, Ken Follett, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Reading, writing, traveling with my wife, playing tennis, meeting people.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, playing tennis, traveling, and volunteering at a hospital.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Talking with other people.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a story about s bicycle chase to a friends house who turned out to be the vilian.
What is your writing process?
I use my dreams and add to them. I just start writing. I don't use an outline. I just start writing and see who and what shows up.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read everything. History, science fiction, crime fiction, biographies, etc.

As soon as possible.
