Interview with Crystalwizard

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, actually, I do. it was a small book that I stapled together, did crayon illustrations on and asked my dad to write the text to because I couldn't spell very well. it was about a rabbit on a hill. I was about six at the time. Wasn't much of a book, really, but it was for a kid of 6.
What is your writing process?
That's a really vague question. I'm going to assume you want to know what I do in order to write/while writing. I get an image in my head and start describing it. As that flows out, I start weaving events and actions around it. As the story grows, I stop every now and then, flesh out the coming details in my brain - usually by talking about them out loud to myself while driving down the road. Every time a new character shows up, I stop and do a complete character write up on him or her so I can step into their head as needed. Very organic and fluid - like watching a movie while I'm creating it. I usually don't know the ending till I get there. It's like a math problem that I'm solving.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
First story I read would be something out of a first grade reader. No, don't recall much of an impact other than being happy that I knew what the words meant.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm a graphic artist, so I do my own covers. I want the cover of any book I am working on - mine or someone else's - to reflect something in the story. I'll usually pick out a scene and illustrate it, though sometimes if I'm working for some other author, they tell me what they want and I simply create it for them. I hate books that have covers which do not match the story. A dark haired knight on a horse, for example, on the cover and a blond haired knight in the book. hate that.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Depends on my mood. They'll be sci-fi/fantasy most likely, but once in a while I am into westerns or cyberpunk. Why? Because that's what I feel like right then. How about you?
What do you read for pleasure?
Depends on my mood. My own stuff :) (write what you want to read, you know?), anything by Colin P. Davies, Ray Bradbury, Roger Zelazny, Lyn McConchie, Andre Norton...
What is your e-reading device of choice?
my computer.
Describe your desk
um, I don't have one? I have a small table that slides under the couch and my laptop perches on that.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Grew up in New Mexico and it had little influence on my writing. The only thing I can think of that it had any influence on is that when I needed to describe a desert for a section of one of my books I was able to use the area I grew up in for that. Other than that, nothing.
When did you first start writing?
As soon as I could, really. I've told stories all my life. Started by let's pretend as a small child and just morphed into let's put it on paper as I grew older.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's a 6 book series and the synopsis is too long for this question so I'll boil it down. High tech hero stranded on low tech magical world and his misadventures trying to save the world from certain doom.

Sojourn Chronicles:
Book one - Wizard's Bane
Book two - Villenspell: City of 'Wizards
Book three - Wizards and Wanderers
Book four - Army of Misfits
Book five - Lost Lands
Book six - World's End

Come read it :)
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Didn't want to give up control of my hard work to someone else. Didn't want to have to take the measly pittance that most traditional royalty paying publishers pay their authors for it, either.
