Interview with Carol Treacy

How do you approach cover design?
My sister, Sue Slutzky, has been a graphic designer for most of her adult life. I work with her, giving her my ideas and then let her run with it. I love the cover for Vegan Cowboy and her design for my upcoming novel,The Scheme, is incredible!
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm a big fan of John Grisham novels. Courtroom dramas in movies and books has been one of my favorite genres. I vacillate between non-fiction, mystery and traditional fiction. It depends on my mood. I once read almost six Robert Crais novels one after the other. Bad idea! I burned out on the characters and couldn't bring myself to read any more Crais novels after that.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I honestly haven't found one marketing technique that's been better than another and so far, none have worked very well. Perhaps because Vegan Cowboy is my first novel and, before that, I wasn't a published writer.
Describe your desk
When I don't have a 20-lb cat laying across my desk, I have a pile of papers I'm working on, a letter tray filled with post-its, lip balm, pens, a nail file, a container of goji berries, and a hair clip. My cell phone sits to my right and a metal water bottle to my left. Of course, the computer monitor and speakers also grace my desk.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was raised in Studio City and Tarzana, California. Both cities are suburbs of Los Angeles and both are wonderful places to grow up but they didn't influence my writing at all. On the contrary, it wasn't until I moved to Northern California that I felt the itch to write. I was 36 when I penned my first screenplay. Three more followed, plus one that I collaborated on with a friend. When I realized how difficult it would be to sell a screenplay, I decided to write a novel and self-publish.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Scheme is about a group of elitist senators who feel contempt for poor Americans, those who live off the government. They devise a plan to 'cull the human herd' by poisoning the inner city fast food restaurants. They've discovered a drug called d.o.a. that increases the effects of potentially fatal conditions like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, five-fold. With a significant number of poverty-level citizens dead, the senators feel that the cost of social services will greatly decrease, not to mention easing the strain of overpopulation in America's cities.

Working for the meat distributor responsible for tainting the restaurant meat, Bonnie Rydover discovers the plot. Despite her moral compass pointing more toward right than wrong, Bonnie has to decide if she should expose the scheme and risk losing her position in the company or keep her mouth shut and continue her upward corporate climb.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me the opportunity to reach a massive number of readers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing is an incredible outlet for my imagination and my desire to educate readers about my passions and interests. I love starting a novel because during the writing process, I'll come up with scenes or dialogue or plot twists throughout the day. I'll grab whatever is available and jot down the 'gem' (hopefully),
What do your fans mean to you?
When book sales are slow or I get a less-than-great review, I remember the people who raved about the book and it brings me back from feeling sorry for myself. It just takes one fan to bring a smile to my face.
What are you working on next?
After I do my final edit for The Scheme, I'm going to begin the novelization of my screenplay, Mozart's Masterpiece. I can't wait!
