Interview with Lucy Felthouse
Published 2019-07-31.
What do you read for pleasure?
So many different genres. Romance, psychological thrillers, crime thrillers, autobiographies, non-fiction... basically, as long as it interests me, I'll give it a go.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle Paperwhite.
Describe your desk
Ugh, really? But it's a mess! I work in a tiny room with work surfaces in front and to both sides of me. They're all covered. Laptop, printer, folders, drink, painkillers, vitamins, pen pots, diary, notepaper, staplers, highlighters, my phone, my Kindle, more dust and dog hair than I'd like to admit...
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I physically could. I remember as a child I was always scribbling away in notebooks, inventing imaginary worlds, deeply inspired by the Enid Blyton books I loved reading. I wish those notebooks were still around - I'm sure I'd be seriously amused at some of the content!
In terms of writing for publication, that was when I was at university studying creative writing. I started out in short stories. I got published by a couple of magazines and websites, and it spiralled from there.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
They make it easy to reach places you otherwise couldn't. They also innovate and add new features, and their customer support is excellent.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting feedback from readers who have enjoyed my books. There's no better feeling.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Without them, I couldn't do this!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The amount of work I have to do! Plus, earning money so I can pay my bills and save up for my next holiday. I love to travel.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom it gives me to have my book put out in the world however I want it to be. With the cover I want, the title I want, etc. I can also enter promotions without having to check with anyone or rely on someone else to change prices. Plus there's less waiting around when your book isn't in a queue with tons of others.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, watching TV and films, working (I don't write full time - I also edit and run a promotions company for writers), spending time with my other half and our dog, walking in the countryside, travelling.
