Interview with John Conley

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I enjoy the process of having an idea for a book, developing the outline, and then filling in the details until the completed book is ready to be published. Of course, positive reviews make it all worthwhile.
What are you working on next?
I'm finishing the second Lord Charles Stewart mystery now. My third book will be a historical novel centered around the Civil War.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, and Wilkie Collins. I believe The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins is the best book I've ever read.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The opportunity to add to someone's enjoyment by producing good fiction.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Watching sports on TV, especially teams from Pittsburgh. I try to take a 5K walk every week.
What is your writing process?
Jot down notes of the general plot and characters. Create a rough outline of the flow. Refine the outline and establish chapters. Write the first draft. Edit by filling in details missed during the first writing. Review, edit, and publish.
How do you approach cover design?
I like to use pictures I have taken. The top third must be available for title and author name.
What do you read for pleasure?
Golden Age of British Mystery novels.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Offering for free on Kindle Direct Publishing. Twitter mentions. Facebook friends.
