Interview with Cynthia Roberts

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh god yes, like it was yesterday! It was, "A Show of Hands." By today's standards, I guess you would call it a YA because I wrote it for my son, Jason, who was 16 years old at the time. Jason was born nearly two months premature. God, he was a little bit of a thing, barely 11 inches long. We didn't know until his early elementary years he was borderline learning disabled. You think girls can be mean? The bullies in his classes were relentless once we had to place him in special comprehension classes. Back then, children like Jason fell between the cracks and didn't receive the individualized attention they deserved. It was so terribly heart-wrenching as a mom. I wrote it as a screen play and plan to convert it to a YA.
What is your writing process?
Would you believe, sit down and go at it :) I've always been that way. I don't write out an outline or long summary of what I think the book will be about. I kind of just get this idea in my head, sit down and just let it flow. All of my books have been like that. My Gramma, God rest her soul, told me I was blessed because the words generate from my soul up through my heart to my fingers. I think she was right with 4 books published and more on the way.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
A Rose In Winter by Kathleen Woodwiss was the first romance I ever read. I'll never forget it. It was back in the early 80's. I loved writing in high school but couldn't pursue it in college. I didn't have that opportunity like most in my graduating class and entered the work force right away. That was 1974. By 1980, I was married with two toddlers & my husband was a police officer, working the late shift. Once I got my little ones down for the night, I loved to read, relax with a glass of wine and escape into another world I could only dream of. Kathleen's world was my first. Every book of hers thereafter made me want to be just like her, creating stories that gave women pleasure, hope and help them escape, if only for a little while.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance ... romance ... romance. I'm a diehard romantic. I learned much later in life also that my mother's dad was half Native Indian and from a tribe in New Mexico, which we're still trying to learn more of. When I discovered, Cassie Edwards and her Savage Series, holy moly!!! I read them all. My love and respect for that culture led me to begin my Iroquois Series because I originally was born and raised in upstate New York and never found a romance based on tribes of the Iroquois Nation. That's when, Wind Warrior was born.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I did have a Samsung tablet, but I gotta tell ya ... there is something about holding a book in your hand instead. I gave my tablet to my grandson. Maybe some day ... when paperbacks on no longer available.
Describe your desk
It's a L-shaped monster made of honey oak with dual monitors ... one for typing ... one for looking up research while I type. I'm surrounded by photos of my grand babies and those people who have supported me through the worse detours in my life.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating the kind of raw human emotion that makes readers walk away feeling entertained, inspired and the importance in knowing, "Without imagination & dreams, we lose the excitement of wonderful possibilities."
What do your fans mean to you?
Just like my family ... everything! When a fan expresses utter joy after reading one of my books, it's sooo very exhilarating and uplifting. I sent my books to conventional publishers and agents for nearly 10 years and got shot down time and time again. The reject letters I received in the mail could have wall papered my bathroom. I had no voice until self-publishing and distribution platforms came into existence. I am so, so very thankful for Smashwords for giving me a stage to prove them all wrong. And when a fan's accolades are shared after reading one of my books, it brings tears to my eyes.
