Interview with Anna Christian

What are you working on next?
I've been working on a new Bobby and Sonny Mystery called "The Case of the Missing Snake" which features Maxine, a new member of the Bubblegum Detective Agency,
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm a fan of mysteries. I enjoy novels by Ruth Rendall, P.D. James, Elizabeth George. There are other authors that I learn from for example I'm presently reading Patricia Cromwell's, "Cruel and Unusual." What I look for in novels is that they are well-written. Reading well-written books helps me to improve my writing. I don't limit my reading choices to novels. I read widely and across the diaspora.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have a busy schedule but I always take time to relax and enjoy life.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I subscribe to both iBooks and Kindle. I look for books that appeals to my interests.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to travel having recently returned from Australia and Fiji. I've travel to Africa, South and Central America, Mexico, and Canada. I also play the guitar, swim, garden, and of course reading. I am also active in my church.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
That's a difficult one. I started writing poems when I heard my co-workers raving about another co-worker's poems that I didn't find that good. I felt I could do better. I couldn't. But it seemed like a good outlet in which to express myself. I wrote articles and short stories. Those I submitted to the New Yorker and Redbook were rejected, of course. I aimed high. I wouldn't recommend anyone to follow my example. I've since learned that I should have studied the magazines I wanted to write for.
What is your writing process?
Over the years, I've written journals. I have one in which I keep my thoughts, feelings, people and situations I've encountered. I might include descriptions of places I've visited. Along that line, I have a separate journal which I take with me on my travels. I also keep a garden journal. Some of these entries provide me with ideas in which I may include in my writing. My writing process varies. I might start with an idea. I write out a summary, followed by character profiles, conflict. chapter outline. The most important advice I would offer to the novice is whatever process you choose, follow through to the end. Don't try to edit as you go. Finish whatever you're working on. Then go back and revise.
