Interview with Dakota Madison

Published 2014-01-01.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I love to spend time with my husband and our bloodhounds. I love reading, especially romance novels. I also love watching movies. And I enjoy traveling.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth. I generally go by recommendations from friends and other romance novelists.
What is your writing process?
I write every morning without exception. I also try to write during my lunch hour at work. I write as quickly as possible and don't begin the rewriting/editing process until the first draft is completed. I don't share my work with anyone until a first draft is completed.
How do you approach cover design?
My husband designs all of my covers. We work together on the concept and he does all of the design work.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was about four or five years old. As soon as I learned to read, I told my mom I wanted to be a writer.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm writing a four book series that takes place in a fictional town very similar to the one in which I grew up in rural northern New Jersey. Each of the books focuses on one of four brothers.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It could be the greatest time in history to be a writer! We now have the ability to market our work directly to readers while maintaining complete creative control of our work.
What authors have influenced your writing?
I'm an award-winning/optioned screenwriter and I'd been writing scripts, as well as kids books and non-fiction under my legal name. I'd never given much thought to writing romance until I just happened to pick up SLAMMED by Colleen Hoover. The book changed my life! I realized I actually loved reading contemporary romance and as soon as I tried writing my first romance novel, I was hooked!
What do your fans mean to you?
I am SO grateful to have readers who enjoy my work. It's truly a blessing. I love entertaining others with my stories.
Is there a writer you would like to meet?
I wish I could have met Stieg Larsson before he died. Lisbeth Salander (The Millennium series) is one of my all-time favorite literary characters. She's tough, smart and fierce and absolutely compelling.
