Interview with Mitchell T. Jacobs

What is your writing process?
I tend to write as I go. For me writing comes alive when you do it, and the plot and characters naturally progress by themselves. I'm just there to record what happens along the way.
How do you approach cover design?
For me, covers are what draws readers to a title. I prefer simple, eye-catching designs. If you notice, all of my covers have a unified theme, so to speak. I believe that a prospective reader should be able to tell what series a book is from just by glancing at the cover, and a unified theme helps immensely with that.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Lord of The Rings: Tolkein is a classic writer, and I enjoy the world building he does within the story.

A Canticle for Leibowitz: I majored in history in college, and the novel is a fascinating look at the cyclic nature of it.

The Killer Angels: I can't point to exactly when my love of history began, but this novel was definite one of the reasons.

With the Old Breed: There are many historical accounts of World War II, but this is by far my favorite. Dark, gritty, and painfully truthful, the author has the courage to not whitewash the ugly, brutal aspects of the Pacific War from both sides.

Rainbow Six: I enjoyed most of Clancy's work, but this book was my favorite in particular, due to its fast moving plot and well thought out action sequences.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The process of creation, and seeing the end result. People were surprised when I told them I wrote a full length novel in the span of a month, but for me it was very easy to write. Just being able to create something out of your own imagination is enthralling, and that's why I do it. Paychecks are nice, but when you get down to it, I do this because these things are so darn fun to write.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are everything. You can have the greatest piece of literature the world will ever know, but if you keep it locked in a drawer forever, does it matter? I hold fans with the utmost regard, because they're the ones taking the time and spending the money to get invested in my work. I'm already invested because I wrote it, but the fans are the ones that pick you out of a million other choices. They choose to become invested in your work when there are a million other things they could be doing, and that's why I hold them in such high esteem.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on short stories that tell side tales based off my first novel. I also have a sequel novel in the works.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm an anime fan, so there's often a show in my queue.I'm also an avid board gamer.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use a Kindle, since I got it for free.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The ability to have complete creative freedom. I'm not one to stick to the old methods if there's a better way of doing things, and for me indie was the best choice.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The possibilities each day brings. It's easy to get down when everything's tough, but as long as you're still breathing, there's still hope. Like my karate dojo said, 'Seven times down, eight times up'.
