Interview with Dana Caldarone

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have an odd outlook on life. There are things in my life that I "know" I am "supposed" to be doing. Being married to my wife is one of them. Teaching is another. And writing novels is a also something I am supposed to be doing. After studying writing for four years at Brown, my ambition was to live in Vermont, teach, and write. Then I met my wife and my plans changed. More than 30 years later, an unexpected motivation led me back to writing and once I started, I couldn't seem to stop. A little more than two years later, I had four books written and published. It feels right. I know this is what I am supposed to be doing. And I love it...
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I am thrilled by the possibility that a reader may be affected by reading one of my books... that reading it may make a difference in how they look at their own lives... that they may make a connection with one of my characters and that that connection may give them pause to think...
What is your writing process?
The characters and the story live in my head for a bit before anything actually gets written. Some research is required at times. (That part is always interesting to me because I learn so much!) But once I start to write and start to get to know my characters, I begin, in a sense, to lose control of the work. The characters don't necessarily do or say what I write. A lot of the time, I just write what I know they would do or say, given the situation and who they are. This is the best part of writing, for me, as the work in progress takes on a life of its own and becomes what it needs to be.
