Interview with Daniel Kay

When did you first start writing?
I started writing in fourth grade and haven't looked back since. In college I honed my skills both privately and in writing workshops, and I published my first short story in 2006.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The sort of stories I want to tell these days are often not considered mainstream. They are stories that are either deemed "high risk" (erotica) or else have small target demographs. That doesn't mean that people aren't out there that want books about these things, it just means that they might not command the space in bookstores. In the digital age, we can connect to each other directly now.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I get images in my head all the time, and it's so rewarding to be able to put those images and thoughts into words and reread it and feel a sense of accomplishment knowing that someone else will get a similar image in their head when they read it. Getting feedback from my readers saying one of my stories moved them or pleased them or satisfied them in some what is hugely rewarding as well.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean a ton to me. Without fans, these stories could simply stay on my harddrive for my own personal enjoyment and never see the light of day. In fact, without fans I might never put digital pen to digital paper in the first place to write them down. I write for me, but sharing it with other like-minded readers keeps me motivated and always trying to improve and invent new stories.
What are you working on next?
I've got my fingers in half a dozen other pies, from short stories to novels. I have a full-length novel in the works set in a fantasy world with magic and unicorns. I've got several scifi-fantasy ones brewing as well, and quite a few short and sweet tasty little snacks to look forward to.
Who are your favorite authors?
David Eddings, JK Rowling, George RR Martin, JRR Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K Le Guin, Robert Heinlein, Raymond E. Feist
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Only vaguely, back in that 4th grade class. I think it was about a kid going to school and getting lost on the way and going through a wacky adventure.
What is your writing process?
I write stream of consciousness as much as I can. I just get it all out on paper first, in order. I go back and edit and polish it up later once I have the general idea out. I never "jump around." I write from start to finish in order.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love good science fiction and good fantasy. I also really enjoy a good biography or autobiography, especially of actors and musicians from the 1960s.
Describe your desk
My desk is a cluttered mess of useful things, random junk, scraps of paper, paper clips, dice, candy, cups, pens/pencils, notepads and all manner of stuff. It's chaotic, but I generally know where everything is...
