Interview with Daniel Pagac

Describe your desk
I like to write on the couch, starting first with pen and notebook. When I start typing the novel I sit at a table, notebook on the left side as I am left-handed.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Waterford, Michigan. The parts of growing up here that influenced my writing stemmed from being around a middle-class neighborhood where hard work and core family values were paramount. Getting a good education was a priority and I was exposed to a great deal of literature and advanced placement classes that broadened my mind.
When did you first start writing?
My first serious writing started when I was in high school. I collected comic books and from that influence I created my own pantheon of superheroes and began to craft stories based on those heroes.
What's the story behind your latest book?
As a child I loved mythology, Greek and Norse, primarily. They had fantastic tale and amazing gods and goddesses that enthralled me. During my pre-teen years I developed an interest in the fantasy genre from my experiences playing Dungeons and Dragons and reading their novels and magazines. During my late twenties I dabbled in starting this novel and started writing more in earnest in my mid-thirties. After surviving two heart attacks at age thirty-five, I stepped up the pace. Then, I put it aside to focus on my health. At age forty-two, after ongoing health problems, I decided that I needed to focus on my goal of finishing at least one novel in my lifetime.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The lack of finding a home with a literary agent forced my hand in becoming an indie author. Who wouldn't want someone to handle multiple aspects of editing, marketing, etc for them? Besides, an agent gets you into publishing houses, etc. Maybe for my next novel I'll get lucky enough to have an agent. I'm sure my sales numbers for my first novel will influence their decision.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has pushed my novel into a larger customer base and their tools, like this interview process have helped give readers a sense of my interests and character.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me, writing is like therapy and I love the idea of playing with intellectual concepts. Sometimes, ideas for the story seem to come from out of nowhere, but fit so perfectly that I will pump my fist in joy at the idea I have just conceived.
What do your fans mean to you?
Right now I have a very modest fan base, but it means a great deal to me. That anyone would pay to read my creation humbles and flatters me. It's even more rewarding when they enjoy what I've written and compliment me on the work based upon how it has affected them.
What are you working on next?
After my first novel one of the characters, Malachael, so appealed to me that I decided to write his back story. I'm on chapter four and enjoying it a great deal.
Who are your favorite authors?
Charles Dickens is the greatest author ever in my opinion. His style has had an influence on how I write. I also enjoy he works of Wilkie Collins, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dashiell Hammett, Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, and Edgar Allan Poe.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I struggle with health problems that leave me unable to work. It wasn't always that way with me. At one point I worked 50-60 hours every week and functioned at a high professional level supervising about forty employees, dealing with 100-150 physicians, and managing their monthly income. Adjusting to my new circumstances has been a struggle, but a love of life, a short, precious gift, motivates me to get up every day. Writing has become a central theme in my life and having that creative process to support me has added a new element to my existence.
