Interview with Dan Petrosini

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Brooklyn and Staten Island were home till my early twenties. Living there exposed me to the unique characters in my latest book, Complicit Witness. The neighborhoods were filled with wannabes and schemers and provided a heap of unusual experiences to draw upon. It also made clear that there is no easy way to make it, you have to work hard at whatever you do.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to express myself while communicating a story to a reader is very rewarding. Putting the stories that float and develope in my mind into a book takes discipline but is woth the effort, hearing from readers that enjoy it is the icing on the cake.
What are you working on next?
A crime story that ensnares an innocent vet, struggling to overcome an injury sustained in unusal circumstances, in a murder case.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Well the honest answer is I need a huge mug of coffee to get moving but afterwards its all about creating and learning. Shame on you if you get bored!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I play tenor saxophone in a couple of jazz settings and its another craft where you keep learning and growing. Taking long walks on the beach is relaxing and its where I work out plot issues, (well most of the time I can work em out!)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I browse sites like Smashwords and Amazon for interesting plot lines as well as heed recommendations from people with similar taste.
How do you approach cover design?
I usually have an image of what I want the cover to convey. The design is critical as browsers base some of their decisions on the thumbnail image of a book. Its a long process of either designing yourself or reviewing thousands of images and tweaking them. As a type A person, I want control!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am a Kindle fan! Battery life is excellent and they are pretty indestructible. However, I refuse to get a cover and now I'm on my sixth one!
What's the story behind your latest book?
Complicit Witness is based on real people and events. Set in Staten Island, the story is centered on Tommy, a smuggler for the Italian mob who run things on the Island. The gang expands when it hooks up with a Russian gangster from Brooklyn and morphs as the law puts heat on them. The district attorney attempts to lock up their leader but he repeatedly slips off the hook several times. Frustrated, the DA pressures Tommy to choose between a life behind bars or certain death for betraying his ruthless boss.
What is your writing process?
Like many authors, the process has changed over time. Originally I'd write each day and develop the story as I went along. I'd have a general story arc which I'd expand and work out. However, this approach, while fun, left me with a ton of editing in order to fashion into a book. Now I've taken to more structure; with an outline by chapter etc. It takes more time upfront to have a cohesive plan but saves me on the back end!
