Interview with Dan Arnold

What is your writing process?
Every story starts with an idea. A "what if" concept. Often it will start with a particular action scene, followed by a question. "Why did that happen?" The characters are based on people I have met and aspects of my own personality. The stories are inspired. The process is all about getting the story down as fast as possible, then reading it to see if it is structured correctly. Then the more focused proof reading for errors and omissions begins. When it is roughly complete, I send it out for beta reading. The input from the readers is perhaps the most essential part of the process. If the beta readers like the characters and the story arc, everything else can be tweaked and polished. That's when the editing really kicks in.
How do you approach cover design?
I want a cover that is striking and graphic. It should suggest something about the story. If it is to be one book in a series, it should usually have a clear connection to the others in the series.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read almost anything that falls in front of my eyes. I have favorite authors and genres, but I'm open to new writers and genres.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have three, my PC, a Kindle and an Android device. Ooops, I also have my cell phone. I reckon that makes four!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
As a small child I traveled around the western United States with my parents, in the foster system and later with my adoptive parents. As an adult, I've worked and lived from coast to coast and travelled internationally. The people I've met and the adventures I've survived have become an integral part of my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in my teen years. I didn't write anything I intended to see published until well into my adult years.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm not good at waiting. When I realized that finding an agent, the agent finding a publisher, the publisher developing my book(s) and marketing them, would take years, I spit the dummy.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me, writing is both cathartic and motivated by a desire to bring something to readers that can improve their lives. Yes, fiction should be entertaining, but it can also be inspiring and encouraging. When someone reads my work and takes the time to contact me or write a review...well, that's the best!
