Interview with Darby Higgs

How long have you been interested in wine?
I started drinking wine when I was at university studying Agricultural Science. Viticulture was not a significant part of the course but we had a general overview of all agricultural and horticultural systems. Over the years my curiosity grew as I saw that wine was a complex subject and there were many different varieties and styles to explore.
When did you first start writing about wine?
In 2004 I started looking around for a hobby that I could use to occupy my time when I retired. I had been writing content and websites for a few years. I came across a web publishing platform that would allow me to share my knowledge and passion for wine with a wide audience. So I started writing vinodiversity.com on a part time basis fro a year or two.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Emerging Varietal Wines of Australia is the third edition. I have collected a database of Australian wine producers and the alternative varieties that they use to make wine. This database is the backbone of the book but I have written explanatory notes about the varieties to make it more informative for those begininin theor journey of discovery of new grape varieties.
Why do you write about alternative varieties?
I have always been attracted to the cutting edge of cutting edge of subjects, what is the new thinking, who are the innovators. With wine there is plenty going on with technical side but new varieties bring in a broader range of flavours, ideas, cultures. The comfort zone is populated the established varieties and styles but i am constantly seeking to extend my knowledge by pushing the boundaries. I hope my writing can inspire others to seek new wine experiences.
