Interview with Darcy Midnight

Published 2014-03-01.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Not sure about inspire, but I have to work to make money to well, eat and play.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Work, work, laundry, cleaning, work, cooking, work, dishes, sex, work.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I browse the new releases on Smashwords several times per week. From a biography of A.A. Milne to Selena Kitt's latest erotica, Smashwords has a great selection of authors and topics!
What is your writing process?
I am a spur of the moment, as I have time writer. Many writers are far more disciplined and take time each day to put words down - I need inspiration or a thought. Sometimes this stems directly from my experience and sometimes a fantasy I have. I start to write and don't stop until I drop - I hate to interrupt the creative flow.
How do you approach cover design?
I scour websites like for royalty-free images that fit (or closely) the book's content. I am also a buff photographer and will use some of my own too. I use MS Paint, Picasa, or to a lesser extent, Photoshop to modify.
What do you read for pleasure?
Erotica and select fictional stories. Very occasionally, a biography. How to's as well, specifically how to's related to writing.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
iPad - had an iPad 1 and traded it in for an iPad Air this year.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I try to use all social media platforms: Reddit, Google+, Twitter, etc. It is difficult to say which ones provide the biggest bang for my time.
Describe your desk
LOL - IF I could find my desk under my laptop, printer/scanner/fax, phone, papers, bills... Clutter seems appropriate. I often write in other rooms anyway. The sofa or bed are typical choices. Sometimes outside.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
U.S. Midwest state. My mother is a strict Catholic and knows nothing of my writing (I'll keep it that way). Dad would be a little more accepting and accommodating, but his "little girl" writing about getting fucked in the ass and blowjobs, etc? Maybe not so much...
When did you first start writing?
I'm sure grade school English class was my first official writing. Erotica? Late teens or early 20's. I look back at some of the early works and think - OMG - did I write that crap?
What's the story behind your latest book?
Inspired by the economy and with friends out of work for extended periods made me wonder how far they'd go to make a little money. While I am NOT condoning anything illegal or unsafe, pay to play (prostitution) is the world's oldest profession...
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I write about sex, not about romance. Simple sex does not attract traditional publishers at all. Indie or bust,
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has provided a great outlet for "forcing me" to put words on paper in some kind of structured way. I am very grateful to Mark Coker and Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Satisfaction of completing a good, solid sex story. The money is nice too, but not enough for me to live on. Something about seeing an eBook in print... Even better, seeing a free story like Sunrise Surprise have hundreds of downloads. Pretty cool, knowing that someone likes what I write.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't write for fans, so much. I don't know who is buying my eBooks - women or men - or their demographics. I try to write what inspires me and do the best job possible at describing sexual acts, no matter how tame or lurid. Hopefully, others appreciate and enjoy and maybe even become aroused.
What are you working on next?
I always have a couple books in progress. Darcy - Unplugged is close, and that will reveal a little more about my predilections. I want to explore BDSM a little more and how people can bring BDSM into their lives at a minor level. I also have an interesting story about Stacy and her encounter with ....
Who are your favorite authors?
Erotica? Selena Kitt, Stephanie Sarg, Lexi Maxxwell
