Interview with David Avoura King

When did you first start writing?
I enjoyed writing when I was a boy at school. I especially liked writing stories. It was back in the 1990s when I started to take writing more seriously, but it was not until self-publishing became an option that I finished my first novel and started to write a lot more.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Getting a traditional book publishing deal is not easy, so when indie publishing and ebooks became popular, I realised this was the way forward, especially as no need for an agent and having full control over the books and publishing process.
What do your fans mean to you?
I hope that all my fans will enjoy my writing. As I write some science fiction, and non-fiction, my fans are in different groups, but they are all equally important, whether I am informing them or entertaining them.
What are you working on next?
I am working on two novels, not sure which one will be completed next, but both are science fiction. In my Norton Blake series, the next book will be a sequel to Mars Out Of Time, and its storyline was hinted at in the end of that story. Norton Blake and Katrina Williams find themselves in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963, just before President Kennedy is going to visit. They will have to choose whether to save him and find out the consequences, or else let him die. Or, the third option, to use a clone of JFK to take his place on the day he is assassinated.
I might call it Saving JFK.
The other novel is about a man who discovers he has the ability to go out of phase and the things he can do with that, as well as the consequences for misusing his ability.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My main job is doing presentation graphics in a bank. It involves some creativity but is mostly technical. My writing is my creative outlet.
What is your writing process?
When writing a novel, I like to plan things out first. I think about the basic premise, start to think about the characters, and use the snowflake method to build up the characters and story, and all the scenes, before I start writing the book.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read science fiction, thrillers, mysteries, and self-help books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have both a Kobo and Kindle which I use regularly. I also have a Nook which I use less often as Barnes & Noble no longer sell ebooks in my country.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Some books I read because they were recommended on websites or podcasts, and I browse the books listed in promotional emails from places like BookBub. I also look at what Amazon recommends.
How do you approach cover design?
I think for cover design a strong image will have good impact, and I look for quality images in photo libraries, either paid or free. The paid-for ones are usually better.
I choose appropriate fonts that look good and try to choose the right colours for them. I avoid too much clutter and especially avoid too much text. There is no point in putting "awards" or testimonials on a cover, it does nothing to help the look of the book.
