Interview with David Ross Wood

Published 2018-11-20.
Who are your favorite authors and why?
Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Steven King and Wilbur Smith among many others. I like different authors for different reasons. Tom Clancy gives a lot of technical detail to his work, Clive Cussler keeps the action coming, while Steven King is fantastic at character development. Wilbur Smith writes great historical fiction but the one thing in common with all of these authors is that they write a great story.
How do you approach cover design?
I want the cover to say a couple of things. Firstly the layout needs to grab the attention of the potential reader, then I want it to give some insight into the story that I have told.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote a short story for my sons back in 2001 in the hope it would motivate them to read more. They were the main characters in the story and after about 15 years of the manuscript laying untouched in my top drawer, I eventually published it after finishing my second adult fiction novel.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
i grew up in a city north of Adelaide, South Australia called Elizabeth. It had a reputation as a tough place to live. My father read every night and I remember reading his novels once he had finished with them. So at an early age I was reading Alistair McLean, Ian Fleming and Alexander Kent. My love of action and adventure tales really took hold then and remains today.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
i have always thought I had a few good stories to tell. Before writing I was a Printer and since my teen years I have had an affinity for paper and ink. Many years ago a writer could only dream of seeing his work being published. Now there are so many publishing platforms for the Indie author, platforms that guarantee all the hard work will eventually be seen by the reading public.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Probably a few things. I love the process, especially the research. The satisfaction of writing that last line is unbelievable and only bettered when you get that first good review from a total stranger who has clearly appreciated the effort.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. While I love writing, without an audience it would mean absolutely nothing. I write for my fans and love the feedback for it vindicates what I do.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a historical piece set in the First World War about a Lighthorse Brigade that fought in the Middle East.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. My wife and three adult sons. But also the process of writing. I have a vague idea where my story is heading but sometimes at the end of the day I will look at what I have written, totally surprised at the direction the tale has taken.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm like most guys I guess. I spend time with my family, the usual domestic chores and I love my sport. I will watch almost anything but my heart is with my local football team, The Crows.
