Interview with David Edward Wagner

When did you first start writing?
I remember writing my first stories as early as seven years old but I began to take it seriously, began to see it as a profession, in high school. Now, twenty-something years later, I am just as passionate, if not more so, about creative writing in all of its forms. The power of words to create images, mold characters and breathe life into actions and motivations never ceases to fascinate me.
What do you write about? I mean, what things inspire you to write?
I write about the things that astound me. The places where psychology meets philosophy, where science meets spirituality and biology confronts technology. I dig science and history. Philosophy. Comic books. Oceans. Deserts. I love rock and roll in all its various disguises.
What is your writing process?
Slow and steady.
What's the story behind Marvelous Things?
I wrote Marvelous Things during a heavy round of philosophical research into consciousness, particularly in the development and origins of consciousness. One day I just began writing, messing around, thinking I would be jotting down a short story. It was a scene of a man waking from a deep space hibernation chamber, feeling the cool air on his skin for the first time in years, clearing his mind as he came back to consciousness. When the scene was complete, I realized I didn't have a short story, I had a novella. The story itself fell into place quickly once I decided to go for it. Plus, I got to develop some futuristic bio-technology which is always great fun.
