Interview with Allen Davis

Describe your desk
I don't use a desk very often. I carry my laptop with me and when I get the urge to write I am ready. My most productive writing is usually late at night when its quiet while lying in bed. At other times i'll work as I drink my morning coffee.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the West Texas town of Midland. Most readers will remember Midland as the the one time home of President Bush and his wife Laura as well as the first President Bush. West Texas is known for its oil, cattle ranches and cotton farms and requires its residents to face problems that other areas of the country seldom witness.

Normally dry conditions dictate farms that rely on little rainfall which is why cotton is grown. The prairie grass is usually scarce which require huge amounts of land to raise cattle so you wont see many small ranches. The oil industry is either boom or bust. One year the areas is booming because of high oil prices then the next year businesses may have to go out of business as oil prices drop.

Growing up there must have influenced my first book since that is where it takes place.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The one main reason I never wrote a book previously is because of the cost and time to get a book published in print. Ebook technology has made it a low cost adventure while allowing the writer full control of his book's content, editing and publishing without most of the head aches of dealing with the large publishing houses.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
i think the joy comes from the fact that your readers have enjoyed your book. The fact that a writer is creating something from his or her thoughts and ideas and allowing others share them is gratifying in itself.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are everything. I mean, why else would I write a book at all if it wasn't to entertain someone. Being able to write a story that makes someones emotions surface is the number one reward of writing.
What are you working on next?
My next book will be a continuation of my 1st book, CONCHITA'S EYES. If my readers enjoyed it then they will like the follow up story of Wayne and Conchita's quest for love and happiness. As in the first book, the obstacles they face seem insurmountable.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Actually my first writings were poems written to my high school sweetheart while I was serving in the army. She was the person that was most responsible for inspiring me to read with earnest.
How do you approach cover design?
Choosing a cover design was one of the more difficult processes of writing my ebook. The cover must convey what the story is about and must fit the descriptions of the scene, main characters, time era. Then to put all of that into a single image is difficult. That is what readers see first when searching for a book to read and must get their attention and hold it.
Who are your favorite authors?
Without a doubt they are some of the well known American writers such a Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, John Steinbeck, John Grissom and Tom Clancey.
