Interview with Dawn Brazil
Published 2014-08-15.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on the sequel to Finding Me titled, Enlighten Me. I am halfway through the first draft and I'm super excited for everyone to catch back up with Chloe, Chris, and the other members of The Great 8.
What is your favorite book?
I have many favorites…. But if I had to narrow them down, I would have to do so by new favorites and old favorites. Here they are in no certain order: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, and Delirium by Lauren Oliver. My older book favorites are: Rose Madder by Stephen King, The Long Walk by Stephen King, and The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom (yeah, I know this title is out of place with everything else but it is so emotionally inspiring it can’t be left off this list).
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Spending time with my family, Sleeping. Cooking. Movies…in that order.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I most certainly do...It was a fairytale retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I was in middle school and it was a play that my drama teacher actually allowed us to make. Needless to say, I was stoked!
What motivates you to write?
My love for creating drives me. I have to be passionate about the characters too or I won’t finish the story. But nothing compares to the high I get when I write an awesome scene. Or when my characters do something unexpectedly amazing.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Recommendations from friends, a great blurb, and a known author that I love already motivate me to read.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the very first book but I recall the one that had a major impact on my life. I had just been placed with a new foster family and the room I was in had been occupied by a much older teen - I was in third or fourth grade at the time. I stumbled across books she had left. One book in particular looked interesting for the pretty cover so I read it and was utterly shocked...and hooked on reading forever. That book was The Flowers in the Attic...yeah, it was so inappropriate at the time. I loved it!
