Interview with James Livingood

Describe your desk
My desk usually has a fair amount of soda cans and notebooks. In the morning, a coffee cup invades, but is quickly defeated. I also have a "Chuck Norris a day" calendar some friends bought me.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Montana and it made me desire to be a writer, but I didn't act on it. I think the impulse was less about writing and more about seeing the world. Now that I've seen the world a bit, I come back to the desire to write.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was in grade school, though I don't remember the specific year. I re-read the "book" I created then... which almost led me to giving up on writing. It was horrible. Still, I like the idea of building a book and having people read it, so I continue on.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Zombies versus Dinosaurs. So mankind is near destroyed by a genetic virus (zombies). To combat this terrible virus, and because we no longer have access to gasoline, we create franken-monsters: dinosaurs.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
A mix of ease and difficulty. I like how easy it is to submit new work, but how difficult it is to get steam going on anything.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords hasn't yet, but I am just starting today. Hopefully this Smashwords service will contribute greatly to my success.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Perhaps this will sound horrible, but selling a book. I haven't made much money, but the honor I feel that someone put down their hard earned cash to hear what I have to say is humbling.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am not really sure I have a fan base yet.
What are you working on next?
I am just finishing with Pale Rider and will be cleaning up some of the previous books. Then I may either start something new or dust off a short story that did well.
Who are your favorite authors?
Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author. Not only does he produce excellent work, but he also gives would-be authors a "peek behind the curtain" on how he works. I find it fascinating and inspiring.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
That I have writing and work to be completed! Always more to be done!
