Interview with Sean Day

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To create my own views of the world and the conflicts that we all face. I enjoy the challenge of presenting a story that can scare the audience or a poem that can give the audience a deep emotional feeling that they cannot find anywhere else.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Without the fans I don't have anyone to reach with my brand of horror or poetry.
What are you working on next?
Many projects. My next novel, next poetry book, and film script. The next novel will focus on the horrors of being human. The next poetry book will be poetry from when I was in high school titled "Purgatorial Writings". The film script will be a comedy with horror elements. I am unable to reveal anything else as I enjoy giving my audience a surprise.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Arthur C. Clarke, Carl Sagan, Edgar Allan Poe, and Douglas Adams. They are all very inspirational with their unique style. I have read more books by these authors than any others in the world.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To get all of my ideas out of my head and onto the page. I am inspired by my wife and children to do my best with all of my writings and photography. Without them I wouldn't be the person I am today.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Photography. I love visiting the beach and cemeteries so that I can find unique images to inspire me further with my writings. My children love to help me spot the perfect picture opportunities.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was in second or third grade. The teacher asked the class to choose a classic tale from the list she provided and make it our own. I chose Aladdin. After she graded my horror version of the tale she made sure to tell me how much she enjoyed it. She was the first teacher to tell me that I would be a writer when I grew up. Ever since I was told by almost all of my teachers the exact same thing.
What is your writing process?
I first think of either the beginning or ending. I write it down and hide it for two weeks. I then go back and make notes for an outline for about a month. I hide it away again for a couple of weeks. I read over the notes and outline and start the first draft. I take a few weeks break in between each draft. After I finish the third draft I am finished. This is my process for novels. During the breaks I work on other projects. It takes me about one year to finish a novel.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first novel I ever read was in fourth grade. Stephen King's "It". That novel is my bible for writing my own novels due to the amount of clever design it possess'. It made me realize what I wanted to do when I got older. Become a writer.
How do you approach cover design?
I think about the cover once I finish the first draft. I try to design a cover that states what the book represents. It is a long process as well considering that I have designed my own covers so far.
What do you read for pleasure?
Horror and physics.
