Interview with Vidal D'costa

What do your fans mean to you?
Without their appreciation an' criticism, I'd be nowhere. I wanna thank my biggest fans who're my classmates as they've read everythin I've written, be it comics or my stories.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's comin up with new characters an' original story lines an' just lettin my creativity glow an' sharin my work with others.
What are you working on next?
I'm workin on two fanfics on wattpad. One's a DW fanfic ft Tenrose, the other's a TOTA or Takin Over the Asylum (a forgotten gem of a show) fanfic. Other works in progress are Vigilante in love which is in the action/adventure genre, The Actor's Daughter (romance genre) and another sci-fi book.
Who are your favorite authors?
RL Stine, Ruskin Bond, Enid Blyton, Isaac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut an' Roald Dahl
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wattpad fans, my fellow bloggers, the need to jot down ideas that pop into my mind, food...and the telly!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Listening to music, watching telly, studying, reading books and anything else I can get my hands on, playing the piano, singing an' dancing
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I just read the synopsis or choose my fav genre an' read it if it's interesting, intriguing an' has got great interaction between the characters or a unique idea, even if it's got bad grammar
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I started out drawing comics and followed it up with a story about superhero siblings titled The Weirdoville Treasurez (u can find it on internet archive and on wattpad) This was my first story on paper. My first ebook on wattpad was an Impractical Jokers fanfic which is still goin strong.
What is your writing process?
I start out with casting my characters. I cast various actors in the roles of my characters, since it helps me visualize em better an' incorporate some o' their characteristics as well in the characters. Then, I start to write. I make up the synopsis for it and a place for the story to take place in. As I write, I visualize the actors playing out my story as a movie (which is the big dream, btw!) This helps me come up with new ideas an' situations for the characters and avoid writer's block. The best ideas come to me in bed or while I listen to music or watch telly.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I read was Werewolf of Fever Swamp (the Goosebumps series) by RL Stine. It made me fall in love with the horror genre and now I've accumulated almost the entire goosebumps series!
What do you read for pleasure?
Books by Ruskin Bond or Sudha Murthy
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Don't have one. I just use the Aldiko app or Adobe reader apps on my phone or read on wattpad
Describe your desk
Right next to my bookshelf, full of chemistry and physics textbooks, really boring and a mess!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a village called Cansaulim. Since, I'm Goan , I wrote a sci-fi ebook based in Goa titled Danger, danger Will Ribeiro(find it on feedbooks or wattpad or my blog) which brought to light the ongoing corruption an' problems faced in Goa, with a dash o' time travel!
When did you first start writing?
In high school, during free periods or at recess
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's a sci-fi ebook about a serum gone wrong, but is also brotherly love and family and never losing hope. It's a tribute to the soldiers. I got the idea as I was thinking of writing a new Smennant (David Tennant and Matt Smith) fanfic in bed, but instead came up with this!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My classmates from high school who encouraged me an' the desire to see my books on shelves an' ebook readers round the world an' someday on the big screen or as a telly show!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's helped me share my stories with more avid readers
How do you approach cover design?
Just make it attractive, but keep it simple, I guess.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Don't have any favorites yet. I love all the books on my shelf an' the ones that will be in the future equally!
Favourite movie adaptation of a book?
3 Idiots (from 3 mistakes of my life by Chetan Bhagat)
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'll leave that to the experts.
