Interview with Dee Davis

Published 2018-11-16.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up moving around the Southwest. We moved every two years for most of my life. So I never really had a "hometown". As much as I hated having to move from place to place, my father and mother always made an effort to make each move seem like a grand adventure. And I find to this day that my heart longs for that sense of something new. My books follow that pattern, set in places like Ireland, Colombia, Vienna, Hallstadt, Atlanta, Manhattan and Colorado. My characters seem to crave adventure as much as I do!
When did you first start writing?
I've always written. From the time I could hold a pencil and was presented with a blank piece of paper, I had stories to tell. But I didn't actually think of writing as a career until I was almost forty. With my daughter heading off to grade school, I needed to find a new identity. And so I made a list. Crazy pie in the sky things that I'd always wanted to do. And one of those things was to write a book. After much contemplation, I decided I should give it a try. And here I am almost twenty years later, still writing, still publishing, and still pinching myself to prove that it's true.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I'm not sure this is the absolute first one, but it was about a girl in the Old West, who moved all the time and her search for true friends. I used to have a copy of it (and the accompanying illustration). I suspect it is somewhere up in one of the boxes in my attic. I do have a story I wrote in seventh grade posted on my website just for fun. Although maybe it should have been lost too!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a large backlist, some of which had gone out of print. Originally, going indie was an opportunity to bring these books back for my readers. But once I got started, I realized that there were all kinds of opportunities in indie publishing. And so I began publishing front list as well.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I am a storyteller by nature. And finding the right words to bring a story to life is one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. It isn't easy. And sometimes the characters refuse to go in the direction I want them to, but I always love the journey.
What do your fans mean to you?
Readers are everything. Without them a story can never truly be realized. I can't tell you how much it means to me when readers take the time to write and tell me what they liked (and sometimes didn't like) about my books. It brings my characters into new perspective. And there is nothing quite like having a spirited discussion with someone about people that I've made up.
What is your writing process?
I don't know that I truly have a specific process. But I am one of those people who knows the beginning and the end of my book before I start. But I don't fully know the middle sections. It's sort of like a map. I know where I am and I know where I want to be, but the journey to get there is developed as I put words to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
Describe your desk
I bought my desk twenty years ago when I started this adventure. It has moved from Texas to Manhattan, where it occupied space in three different apartments, and finally it landed in Conneticut without its upper hutch or l-shaped extension. Made of cherry, it has distressed wood--some original to the desk, and some inflicted by accident by me. It harbors an extra-large iMac, a filing box for papers and folders, and various office paraphernalia. And it ALWAYS sports a glass of iced tea.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love reading, so my favorite authors are numerous. But my all time favorite author is Mary Stewart. Her words literally reach off the page and surround you. My Brother Michael and The Moon-Spinners are two of my favorites. But I love them all. So much so that when I sold my first book, I bought hardcover copies of all of hers. A present to myself. And they still occupy a place of honor on the bookshelf in my office.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My friends and family. I am so blessed to be surrounded by wonderful people who inspire and motivate me. I can't even imagine what my life would be without their love and support.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Great Question!
A Wrinkle in Time
The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe
My Brother Michael
To Kill a Mockingbird
All of these stories are magical books that carry you away to other worlds and help you see them through different eyes, thereby leaving you changed for having read read them.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I am a voracious reader. So it is impossible to remember the literal first story I ever read. But my mother read to us a lot. And I do remember those books. Bambi and Heidi were two of them. And all the Winnie the Pooh stories. I actually have all of those original books on my bookshelf. And seeing them reminds me of why I love stories the way I do.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have various sites that help me find new books and authors, like Bookbub. And of course I listen to recommendations from my friends and on social media, and I am always on the lookout for a favorite author's newest work.
What do you read for pleasure?
Historical Romance - total escapism!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to travel. We lived overseas in Austria for three years. And spent much of the time exploring Europe. We've also been to Japan and Thailand and to most states, although I've still got a few of those left to see. And we're planning a trip to New Zealand and Australia this coming year. I also love gardening--which is almost a full time job with ours. And I am an avid baker who loves the Great British Bake-Off!
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm currently working on a novella in my Time After Time Series. It's the story of two secondary characters who fall in love and wind up working on their very own happily ever after. Of course there are some very bad men trying to keep all that from happening--so fingers crossed.
