Interview with Chris Coutts

When did you first experience the urge to write?
I first began to write sophomoric poetry to girls I knew back in my early twenties. The desire to take a hand in crafting, massaging and delivering the written word has been with me ever since. I enjoy an artful turn of phrase, and produce articles, lessons and prose that I hope tickles the sensibilities of others.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the Wet Coast. The weather was conducive to consuming vast amounts of fiction, and like many of my readers I remember using a flashlight to read "just a few more pages" after bedtime while I was still in elementary school. My tastes in literature run from history to biographical to spiritual and mechanical works, and I tend to devour them whole without taking time for sleep or food except as absolutely necessary. I would like to present material which is consumed in the same way.
Why do people read your work?
I am insatiable in my curiosity, and the people who read my writing tend to the same excess. It is not enough to allude to a subject, it must be presented "of whole cloth", suitable to be read, understood and grasped by the reader. Information without inflection is tasteless to me and to those who read what I produce.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I was prompted to begin this book at the turn of the year. The subject matter has been percolating in my spirit for some time, but I felt compelled to write it now. It came pouring out of me as fast as I could dictate it, and has been as much a joy to create as I hope, to read.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always been a counter culture kind of guy. My curiosity and desire to share my writing wit the greatest possible audience led me to consider e-publishing. I further believe that the publishing industry serves the publisher, not the author. E-publishing as a vehicle is faster, more effective and cheaper for the producer and he consumer.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I am going to speak in the future positive tense when I say "Smashwords has already given me an outlet, where my contributions benefit the reader, the vehicle and ultimately me!"
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The turn of a shapely phrase is a joy unto itself, sharing it is double the joy.
What do your fans mean to you?
My contribution to their lives is a great blessing to me. My desire is that their gifts arise and they in turn can experience a similar blessing as they empower others.
What are you working on next?
The next work will be about balance. There are so many competing forces in the world to dissuade, distract and disturb the joy we are supposed to experience when our lives are balanced. I want to address that with concrete suggestions for regaining and maintaining a balanced life.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite book is the Bible. Ken Follett has written some masterful historical fiction. I cut my teeth on James Michener and I currently read a wide variety of authors and essayists, such as Barbara Wentroble, John Eckhardt, Chuck Pierce and others.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The more I know, the more I realize the less I know, and the more I want to find out. Every day is a learning experience and my curiosity is never satisfied. Some off my associates have dubbed me "Mr. Google" for my wide range of interests. I have been told it's a fond nickname not one given in derision.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
We have a small business and serve a wide range of business and home office consumers, my ministerial duties are a blessing to me and my beloved and I travel and enjoy new vistas, foods and friends as we do.
