Interview with DebiLyn Smith

When did you first start writing?
I was the ten year old that asked for a typewriter from Santa. It arrived in a toy form, orange plastic with a blurry blue ribbon that made all the letters doubled with shadow, but I wrote little stories on it and pretended I was a journalist for a big newspaper.
What's the story behind your first book, the non-fiction Running From Cancer: a tilted memoir?
I was your typical woman in denial that I could get cancer. I was fifty, fit and staying ahead of the cancer "cooties" by using ground flax seed on my oatmeal in the morning. I was "running" from cancer instead of standing up and fighting it before it could catch up to me. Statistics say that 50% of the people who get cancer could have prevented it. That number made me determined to tell my story to wake people up! HEY! Do YOU want to go down this road? Lose your hair, parts of your body, some days your mind and your dignity? If you knew there were little things you could do to tighten your anti-cancer belt, wouldn't you?
This book is to show people what a cancer patient lives through. It will make you laugh and cry and privy to some unknown facts. It will help a cancer patient going through or coming out. It's for friends that want to know what a loved one is surviving. Or not. Complete with sample recipes, tips and websites to check out. A book for EVERY woman.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My message needed to come out NOW to help save more lives instead of waiting the TWO years the publishers I talked to said it would take.
What do your fans mean to you?
I get letters or comments or questions every day of my life about cancer. People thank me for sharing my story and admit they are taking a harder look at their own choices which means the world to me. I am determined to get that number of 50% of preventable cancers DOWN!
What are you working on next?
My first fiction novel Not Just One was released in September featuring naive Kathy Sands, a single mother trying to keep the wolves from her door by working at an electronics store. Her missing ex "was-band" Billy re-appears around the same time Kathy's native babysitter mysteriously dis-appears. Fingers point at Billy who vanishes taking Kathy's children with him. Will Kathy be able to untangle the mess left by Billy namely the desperate drug dealer Snake who figures that if Kathy dies Billy will show for the funeral? Can she find her family and her sitter before it's too late for them all?

The next book in the series is also written and awaits final editing before it's release in 2015.

"You can run, but you can't hide" is the start of this insightful memoir down the Breast Cancer Freeway. Author/survivor DebiLyn Smith says she is your horrible warning. "Don't be naive like I was. Stop running from cancer. Learn to stand and fight back. The earlier you start fighting cancer, the more hope you have. Right now would be a good time." "Fantastic. Funny. Helpful. Precious."
