Interview with Debra Lee

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small mill town in Central Pennsylvania. The sixties was a great time to be a kid where I lived. My house was on the street corner and my backyard was the playground for all the neighborhood kids. Almost every summer we rebuilt our tree fort in the cherry tree or at least added to it. Baseball games were plenty. We even managed to put on plays in that backyard. I look back on those days with a smile on my face.
When did you first start writing?
When I was a stay-at-home mom with two small sons.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I do have a newer release Savior, but my last book Taken seemed to be the biggest hit with readers. And here's how that book came about.

Years ago a small child was taken from his home not far from where I live. The child was never found. His disappearance haunted me over the years, and still does. Hopefully someday I will know what happened to that little boy.

It breaks my heart every time I hear a news report about a missing child. So I suppose the disappearance of that little boy long ago and those heart breaking news stories is what drove me to write TAKEN.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Total control over my work.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing the end to a story that took over my thoughts day and night for weeks, months or years.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans of my work are the absolute best! I love hearing from readers of my books. It really means the world to me for a reader to let me know they enjoyed the story I told.
What are you working on next?
I just finished a young adult fantasy novella, Savior. A first in this genre for me. If readers want more, the plan is to continue with the next story. Also, I was digging around in a file cabinet the other day and found a manuscript I wrote years ago that I think I will rewrite and publish. It's a fun mystery.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Family and work. Plus, one of my three cats, Gertrude lets me know it's time to get up by staring into my face and meowing as loud as she can. She's nineteen and hard of hearing, which I assume is why her meows are almost as loud as a lion's roar.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time with family and friends. I have two grown-married sons and a ten-year-old grandson, who seems to spend as much time with Nan and Pap as he does his parents. We also have a pontoon boat and a campsite along the river where we spend a lot of time during the summer. Recently I took up golfing and the grandson is my teacher.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Browsing online bookstores. I also read the samples and some reviews.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, but that baby is packed away in the attic.
