Interview with Dezi Golden

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, which is my hobby, I am healing or helping clients. I enjoy my bodywork and massage practice a few days a week, I'm a registered massage therapy instructor as well, and on days where I'm not teaching or healing, I see my clients who are in need of help with personal development and life coaching. I get to write in the evenings and on weekends while I travel or find one of those quaint little coffee shops that seemed to be tucked wonderfully in every little town. I guess you could say I keep busy.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Honestly, I don't have much time to read anymore because any free moment I can find I write, but if I do download an ebook it's usually because someone recommended the book or it happened to be on sale. I do have to admit, a great cover can catch my eye (which is why my book covers HAVE to have amazing colors in them) but I also love all the new technology that makes it so easy to carry multiple books around with you. How genius!! Whats better than being able to carry 25 books around with you…without your back hurting!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes of course I remember the first story I ever wrote...it was BreathHealer Book I! It was also the first story I ever finished completely and the feeling was blissful!! It was back in 2009. It ruined me for life. I will forever write, read, and dream in books.
What is your writing process?
My writing process starts with me scribbling on paper in a brainstorming type fashion. I get the story idea (usually upon waking as I come out of my REM cycle) and then I will begin my character creation. I wait until a name flows into my mind, I write it in the middle of a sheet of paper and then I brainstorm and write non-stop all of the attributes to the person, what happens to them, why, how they look, how old they are, what they feel, etc., etc., etc. It's a crazy process if anyone is with me and watching, but for me it really works and sets a good foundation for me to start from. Many things build and change from there, this creative process is absolutely wonderful...and slightly exhausting, but I wouldn't change it. It works for me...and admittedly is SO MUCH FUN!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Right now I use a Kindle Fire that my sister bought me for my birthday. It has really nice graphics and fits well on the shelf near my jacuzzi tub, which is about the only time I get to sit and read a little or watch motivational videos! I try to read from it from my tread climber to…err actually I have it read out loud to me! I love that I can be read to anytime I want.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm still figuring all that out. I really just want to write lol!
Describe your desk
My writing desk is my lap lol! I have a light MacBook Air that I take everywhere with me in my purse. It's the best computer I have ever owned and is ready to go when I open the cover at the park, a coffee shop, on airplanes, or in the car when someone else is driving. I can write just about anywhere...and while carrying on a conversation too! I guess I am pretty talented in that way. You'll only find me at a desk to pay bills. When writing, I'm most comfortable with sweatpants on, a hoodie, uggs and the fireplace going…oh, and a tiny glass of some sort of liquid relaxation (lol). I call that date night with my Mac!!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in central New Jersey...kinda out in the farm parts. The bus ride to school was long, about 45 minutes, so I began reading heavily on the way to and from school. I believe this is when my writing abilities actually began. I learned what I loved to read about, how characters looked in my head and how to try to get a reader (listener) to understand my writings. I guess one must really have to love reading before actually writing....kind of like walking before running.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing on February 14, 2009 as I pulled out of the driveway of my recently sold New Jersey home. It was the day I left my old life to start a new one in New Mexico. BreathHealer Book I was actually created in my head on the four day drive out to Las Cruces, New Mexico. When I reached the new house, I dug out my laptop from the moving boxes and started my fingers typing away.
In my careers, I had always been good communicating verbally as well as in writing, but that was always for employment reasons. When I started writing for pleasure, it was a game changer. I found I was more creative, emotional and fearless. It's true what they say about finding your passion...
What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest book is about a serial killer...I won't say much more than that. I have been able to pull in some past law enforcement skills, some physiology and anatomy knowledge from my massage therapy career, and some great imaginative character traits. That's all I can say at this point.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is the freedom to create in my own way, in my own time and for my own reasons. A big plus is that some enjoy what I have to say lol!
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean reason to keep going. They are the best!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sunshine here in Las Cruces, New Mexico is what greets me each day...then I immediately express my gratitude for another day, for my health, my family, love, my abilities and then universe. Life is wonderful!
