Interview with Diane McKeever

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me is knowing that I will be helping to make the computer experience easier for the reader. I do this in my classes every day and now I'm able to expand my audience.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are just computer clients I haven't met in person, but I look forward to doing that some day.
What are you working on next?
My second book will be titled, Amazing PivotTable Tips. Excel has a fabulous feature called PivotTables that mystify many users. This feature allows for Excel users to analyze vast amounts of data in a variety of ways. This data can also be plotted on a chart very easily making the data easier to visualize. This book should be available by the end of 2014.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My clients and students make me get out of bed every day. I also find that as the bedroom gets lighter with the rising sun my mind becomes filled with ideas that I need to put down on paper. Maybe it's another feature I need to add or expand on in my book or a blog post or an article for LinkedIn. There's always something that needs to be written!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I can often be found in a classroom teaching or at a client's home/office showing them new unexplored features of their favorite program. When I really want to have some downtime I had to one of our guestrooms where I have my sewing machine set up to work on a quilt project.
What is your writing process?
I try to write something every day. It could be another tip on my blog or an article for LinkedIn or some tips in my latest book. I think it's very important that everyone finds a creative outlet and practices that skill every day. If you enjoy drawing, draw every day. If you enjoy singing, sing every day. Find something that reaches into your soul and practice it every day.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a strong graphic design background. My first computer was the 1984 version of the Macintosh. I paid $3,000 for it and the dot matrix printer. With these tools I created a desktop publishing business...before desktop publishing became a household word. Over the years I have had the opportunity to design many different types of material. I draw from this experience and ideas I get everyday from just looking around at posters, billboards, flyers and other book covers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I wish I could say I read extensively for pleasure. I always feel that I should be doing something else when I'm reading. At this point I read the Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine because it has short stories and I can dash through a story before the guilt sets in.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
As a Certified Social Media Marketing professional I have employed a variety of book marketing techniques. The jury is still out on which is the most effective but I have used Facebook extensively, employing their "boost" feature. I also post on LinkedIn. In addition I have a blog to which the Facebook account sends potential customers. I also have a Constant Contact account where I create a monthly ezine that gets distributed to over 1,000 email addresses. I recognize that selling a book is a marathon and not a sprint.
Describe your desk
My book is made up of 100 popular tips derived from a blog I created in 2013. The genesis of writing the blog was that, over the years, clients asked where I learned some of the tips that I shared with them and where they could find more. I couldn't find a book to recommend so I wrote one! This has been a labor of love and I'm energized by the great feedback I've gotten from readers.
