Interview with Diane Mae Robinson

What do you read for pleasure?
I love the classics written by Charles Dickens, Emily Bronte, Sinclair Lewis, Leo Tolstoy. I also like really good fantasy written by writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien and Terry Goodkind.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Gathering and keeping an interested fan base on Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin has provided effective marketing of my books. When I have a new book coming out, I do a book blog tour, which generates reviews and sales.
Describe your desk
Antique large wooden desk with a desk top PC, a laptop, printer, and piles and piles of papers all over it--organized disorganization.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a very small town in Alberta, Canada. This small town had a small library and by the age of 10 I had read every children's book they had and begged the librarian to get more books. When I wasn't reading, I was making up plays that my sister and I would act out. Living in a small town, with not much going on, enabled me to use my imagination from an early age.
When did you first start writing?
Around age 8 when I started making up short plays for my sister and I to act out. I was always the princess; she was the prince who would only wear cowboy attire.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Dragon Grammar Book - Grammar For Kids, Dragons, and the Whole Kingdom is a humorous grammar book based on the characters of my multi-award winning The Pen Pieyu Adventures series. When I would look up a grammar rule, either in a grammar book or on the internet, I found many of the explanations hard to understand. This gave me the thought that if I, as a writer, had trouble understanding some of these grammar rules, what is it like for middle grade students and people learning English? The spark was born and I wrote a simplified grammar book about the basic English grammar rules and added a dash of humor through my characters, who are featured in the examples sentences.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been a traditional published author for several years. I found that traditional book contracts limited what I could and could not do with my books, which ended up hampering book sales. I took an extensive course on self-publishing, attained my rights back from the publisher, and re-published my series and new books I have coming out. Now I can do all kinds of promotional offers with my self-published books.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I've just recently started with Smashwords, but they were highly recommended to me by self-published author friends.
What are you working on next?
After finishing publishing my current two books, which should be up within the next 2 months, I will write book # 4 in the children's fantasy series The Pen Pieyu Adventures.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I write fantasy, so creating the characters, naming them, setting them off on their adventures is very exciting.
